Summary
Amate Yuzuriha longs to escape into the depths of space--to feel true freedom outside of her precious little life on the space colony Side 6. She thinks that with her chance encounters with the courier Nyaan and the mysterious pilot Shuji, and her unexpected dive into the world of Clan Battle, she's found that way.
At least, until her attempt to return from her first ClanBat gets her sucked once more into the Sparkles, which spit her out into a mirror image of Side 6--and, deeper still, into the strange space known as the Velvet Room. She discovers that the world she knows and has strived to escape is doomed to be destroyed by a yet unseen enemy. She is tasked by the master of the Velvet Room to traverse this Alter-Side in search of fellow lost souls (as well as the monstrous Shadows that populate the Side, some with sentience and some without) and gather enough power to combat the enemy when it arrives in one year's time.
As she tries to balance her new mission with her responsibilities on the real Side 6, Amate slowly uncovers new abilities, new troubles, and new resolve--much of which revolve around the enigmatic attendant of the Velvet Room, a man by the name of Édouard Mass...

Summary
Char Aznable has not thought much about the idea of living forever. He's a soldier second and a vengeful wraith first, and neither of those allow much in the way of a long life. His life ended long ago, anyway. Death can take his body when the mission is over.
He also barely gives much thought to the past. He lives in the moment, because when enemies lie around every corner, you can't afford to look back.
He really should have cracked open a history book once or twice, though--he might have avoided this mess if he did.
Or: Char Aznable discovers he's living in a universe made up of immortals, organized crime, disorganized crime, alchemists, demons, and--oddly enough--more reasons to live than he thought he was allowed to have.
