He is taken by the Druids to be prepared for a high ranking officer when they discover something wrong. Keith has already bonded to someone. They need to break his bond, but the process ends up being heart wrenching for Keith.

Zarkon realises that both Kolivan and Sendak are hitting their first ruts, and in an attempt to keep them both safe, he splits his rival students for the duration of their ruts to be safe.
It's just really hard when your dorm-mate and rival keeps saying you've got a tiny knot, and keeps pressing your buttons. Sendak just HAS to prove him wrong, and Kolivan has to meet anything Sendak's done and pay it back double. That's what happens in the heat of the moment; you end up doing (stupid) things.
