It hadn’t been long since Charles joined, but they’ve never had time to talk or really get to know each other. The man was friendly with everyone else, which frustrated Arthur.~

When the breeze shifts the branches next to him he sees the sunlight glint off of the water beyond- a tiny pond, barely more than a puddle, but in the midday light it shines. He can’t help leaning towards it, driven by that instinctual need for a cold relief to a summer’s day, but he recoils before he can make contact with the water. His eyes catch sight of a skeletal dead thing below the surface and he falls back onto his ass, shivering suddenly despite the heat. Recoiling hasn’t helped- every time he closes his eyes a pair of sunken ones stare back, set into a gaunt face on a too-thin frame. It’s been a long time since he has been scared of dead people, but the man in the pond is not a dead person.

Hosea Matthews on the other hand, meets Dutch van der Linde on the side of a road neither of them remembers on his way to Chicago. He looked toward the boy.
He looked lost.
Lost-wasn't something Dutch was used to. It wasn't as easily soothed as a pat on the shoulder or a squeeze around the middle. He figured the kid wasn't one to know much about what comfort was, anyhow.
He stood without a word, felt the kid's eyes following him all the way to where the body still hang on display. Words were whispered to a guard and then, that hat was held delicately in his hands like it was some trophy.
"I don't know much about fatherhood," he said, leaning down to be eye-level with the boy. "My daddy died when I was too young to really get it."
Dutch stood again, propping the hat up on the edge of an empty hitching post. He looked back at the boy, revolver in hand. "But I know enough to know that whatever he was, wasn't it." He pressed the gun carefully into the kid's hands. Guided his thumb to cock it back, wrap his finger around the trigger.
"Whaddya say we give him the sendoff he deserves?"
They left, hand-in-hand, fresh gunshot in the center of the hat on the kid's head.*Pre-game oneshots following Arthur growing up as an outlaw. Arthur+John & Dutch/Hosea are the main relationships.

However a surprise encounter with an old friend helps put his mind at ease and even let’s him share a few things that had burdened him for years.
But all good things must come to an end. And soon enough, John must say goodbye and depart once again.
For just as in life, death is as much a lonely road for two cowboys still trying to right their wrongs.
