Mrs. Mallard is twenty-five and still doesn't have any children. In the world of Autodale, this means that she's bordering on being a failure as a wife. Miss Minola is twenty-three and still isn't married. In the world of Autodale, this means that she's bordering on being a failure as a woman. Mrs. Mallard is far less interested in being a child's mother than she is in Miss Minola, and Miss Minola is far less interested in being a man's wife than she is in Mrs. Mallard.
Mrs. Mallard is almost Pretty, and Miss Minola is almost Ugly, but neither of them quite cares.

The wasteland is a dangerous place, everyone knows this. Full of freaks and monsters and other worldly horrors. But the Friendly Shadow has always been curious about life beyond the walls - and he has never let danger stop him before.
Perhaps somewhere beyond the wastes, was a life better than being Autodale’s favourite tool.

No matter what she was shown, the Mayor with his unnatural digitigrade posture, exposed organs and decaying flesh was all that appeared in his head. As he walked towards her she saw parts where his fleshy body had combined with machines, batteries and wires and saw how everything leaked from him.
Yet he felt more human than the brainwashed citizens currently snoozing away in their suburban homes.

The pain ached through his body like it had been soaking there all day, like a sponge slowly absorbing a puddle and holding the water within itself. It was hard to tell anything else around him as his eyes refused to open, hiding him within the dark caverns over his body. It was the abyss of his mind that echoed with no call back for once.
