    Another Battle of Five Armies fix-it, because we can never have too many stories where there is more to their story than death and grief. Though in this case, there is still some lingering grief. This timeline will be a mash-up of the book and movies, along with some lore and events from the later trilogy (LOTR), and assorted other Tolkien lore taken from various essays, works, and one very entertaining interview between Richard Armitage (Thorin) and Martin Freeman (Bilbo).     And thats how Bilbo ended up returning to Erebor, for a... short visit that somehow becomes quite long.

    There might also be some magical intervention in the midst of it all.

    Bilbo fled Erebor before his friends could be buried, before he had to see Thorin encased in stone. He returns to the Shire and settles into a life of unsociability and some amount of loneliness, but finds comfort in the figures of the children of Hobbiton.
    After twenty years, however, his luck is gone, and Bilbo has to flee the Shire with Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin, and with four very young Hobbits, there is only one place he can turn to.

    First an injury and the coming winter delay his leaving Erebor, then word from the Shire leaves him mourning his beloved Bag End. And because getting added to Thorin's council isn't trouble enough, Kili is in love with an elf, Fili may or may not have his eyes on a certain little scribe, everyone seems to think he is a lady hobbit, and Thorin needs to find someone to marry.

    Okay. So the last part might not be trouble, exactly, except for the part where it makes Bilbo's rather hopeless attachment even more painful. Or it wouldn't if he hadn't possibly accidentally promised to provide Thorin with an heir... and Dáin just might still be scheming something.

    Fortunately, if there's one thing hobbits are good at, it's growing things. And Thorin did promise him a garden.

    For years Bilbo has written about his adventures and told stories about his dealings with dwarves and dragons. To most it seemed like fanciful nonsense but to Bilbo it was all very real. A weight followed him home from his travels, one called regret. Now in his final moments Bilbo has a choice to make – go quietly into death’s embrace or go back again and face all the fear and pain for the chance to make things right?

    Of course, change is a fickle thing and not everything can be done again as Bilbo is about to find out. In the end, it may not only be salvation that he’s fighting for.
