“- and this is the most crucial part,” they say, coming to a sudden stop back in the kitchen. The expression on his face is a serious one. “It’s super, duper, teletonic trooper important,” she says.
"Y-Yeah?” Evan asks. Glancing around, Evan shoves his hands in his pockets, his heart beating painfully fast. He’s desperate and desperately trying not to look desperate. “Name it.”
“So, it’s fine if you’re like, weird and shit,” K says, “That’s honestly kind of a must for anyone that hangs around with us, but you can’t be a creepy weirdo. Are you a creepy weirdo, Edgar?”

"Yeah," he rasps, blinking a little harder. "Yep-, yes." His face twitches, eye wincing shut as his head jerks to the side and back hard enough to jangle the tags on his collar prettily, clearly fighting to pay attention to her and only maybe succeeding. "Yes," he repeats, a little firmer.
It's tough to really believe him when Sam can tell his eyes are focused somewhere off to the left of her face, but it is cute that he's trying, at least.

He can barely sort through the sharp static signals in his head enough to remember the specifics of the scale they'd worked out, what the qualifiers are, the things he's supposed to pay attention to. That means it must be bad, which makes nine a safe bet, right? Or is it a ten? Or-,
