Evan opens his eyes. He's standing in a dark hallway, obsidian walls that extend over the horizon in either direction. There's no light for him to see. His heart pounds in his chest, temples throbbing with a powerful headache, a powerful emptiness. He thinks he should be disoriented, but instead an icy clarity rushes through his veins.
He's been here before. He's dreamt here before. And he knows why he was brought here and by who. Another ceremony, for his passengers.

So Sam sits back and lets herself completely indulge in this moment. She watches the gentle orbits and snarls of Evan's threads tangle into each other as he whispers to them. Leans back and lets him paint her nails with an exaggerated amount of care, giggling whenever he leans in to blow them dry quicker, and very occasionally nudging out at his foot with her own just so she can laugh at the way he steadies her hands protectively, trying and failing to scowl at her for interrupting. It all feels a little bit silly in a way Sam doesn't always let herself get, but who needs an influencer's practiced professionalism when all the cameras are off, really?

Evan probably should have saved himself the trouble and just stayed in bed, but he hadn't. He can't quite remember why, now, when the thought of surging to his feet and running is bouncing incessantly through his head in wordless demand.
"Stay in the seat," something reminds him as a whisper in his mouth, and Evan winces and bites his lip when the girl at the next table glances over at the sound. Don't attract attention; that doesn't make it bad advice.
