After the hectic few months Cody had gone through after his abrupt awakening into the Unsleeping City, a Christmas party with all of his friends should be relaxing. And it wasn’t that it was unwelcome—there was just a lot tied up in it.
However, the party wasn’t just another Christmas party. Sure, that’s what everyone was calling it, but there was so much more riding on it. They were celebrating the defeat of Null and the protection of the waking world and the dreaming world. Of ousting Gladiator from New York City. Of the birth of Langston. Celebrating the expecting parents, too, now that things were settling and everybody could take a minute to breathe. Celebrating that despite the odds, things hadn’t gone to shit. That Sofia’s husband had come back to her. (And maybe, just a little bit, to celebrate the fact that him and Pete had moved into a new apartment together. As tiny and cramped as it was, it was theirs.)

The fluorescent lights in the hospital room were taunting him and making his hands look an odd shade of green. Was he sick? Was that why he felt so weird? Why did his brain feel so...scratchy? Like an old Christmas sweater.
Without knowing why, he sucked in a shaky breath and held it. To keep from crying, but why the hell would he do something like that?

Pete looks up at him and the tears start to spill over, in earnest. “I can’t help it. I can’t stop.”
“Hey, that’s not true,” Ricky says. He takes a step towards Pete, but doesn’t take another, as he suddenly realizes Pete may not want to be touched, or may not want Ricky to touch him, and the last thing Ricky wants to do is cross a line.
“See,” Pete says, his voice wobbling, “even you’re scared of me.”

"I've got it," Ricky said, stepping into Dale's path before he could take his and Sofia's empty plates into the kitchen. He held out a hand expectantly.
"Ricky," Dale laughed, exasperated. "You made dinner. The least we can do is clean up."
"Don't make me wrestle you for it. Not in front of your wife," Ricky said.
He smiled and tried to make it look easy, like this was all a joke, but it really, really wasn't. Dale and Sofia had been working way too hard lately—as had Esther, who wasn't even home yet from Gramercy—and all Ricky wanted to do was take care of them so they could relax for once. It was what he was here for, and he was determined to do it even if he had to put Dale in a headlock first.

“Yeah,” Pete says. He fidgets with his medical bracelet. “Yeah, it’s been awhile.”

But it felt wrong, cosmically wrong, deep enough that she could tell it was the well of the city where she drew her magic going woah, stop and think, probably, and Miya might have only been fourteen but she knew enough to listen. Her suspicions were confirmed when she saw Pete standing next to her wearing his trusty old cowboy hat and, less trusty and less old, his infant.
