New Year’s Eve is always a weird time, for all of them. It brings up a lot of memories- good and bad ones.
Kugrash, of course, always. Sofia swears that sometimes, especially this time of year, she can taste poppyseeds and onions on the wind, like he’s looking down at her from his place of one-ness with the universe. Kugrash is everywhere in the city around them- that was kind of the point of the Everything everything bagel, Sofia supposes- but that understanding doesn’t always help to lessen the grief.
As much as Kugrash’s absence is obvious in moments like this, late December also always brings with it Langston’s birthday, and both of the times their little family managed to save their city from forces of destruction and nihilism. Wally always visits in the days after Christmas, and late December is when Sofie finally got Dale back.
It is, as Cody would say, two sides of the same sword. As sharp as it is sweet.

Pete is out of the room and he’s rinsing the stripe of his hair before he even processes what he’s nodded his agreement to. If he understands, which is always a little doubtful, then he’s agreed to be Pete’s date for the sprawl of a Dream Team Christmas. Which what the actual fuck and that wasn’t a thing people fucking did and mostly just he was fucked. His hands shakes as he rinses out the rest of the dye, infernal heart beat unsteady and in his throat.
“Dude,” The word comes out more of a sigh than he means for it to as he dries his hair just enough to make sure it won’t stick unattractively to his face.
He tries again as he shuffles to the kitchen. “Dude, did you ask me to be your, like, Christmas date, or whatever?”
“Course not,” Pete says grinning. “I asked you to be my fake Christmas date.” Cody would reach for the cigarettes he keeps in his pockets if he didn’t know the way it would crease Pete’s brow. All smoking now would get him would be a stern look and a point to the fire escape and it’s December and too damn cold for that.

"As Sofia takes off towards the giant cobra, Pete catches sight of himself in the windows of the skyscraper on his right. He's just in his casual workout clothes - sneakers, headband, orange shorts with vents in the side, a tank top with the word PHAN-TASTIC written across the front - but the breeze has tousled his hair very nicely indeed, and his chest is gleaming with lines of magical light. He looks like Superman, honestly - well, Superman if he had graffitied a terrible pun onto his shirt, but the point still stands.
Pete smiles, and the three mirror copies smile with him. Maybe it's his imagination, or the aforementioned lines of light, but he could swear he sees happiness on their faces. It's a strange, attractive type of joy - one that comes from recognizing yourself, from seeing your final form and finding it good.
