That morning, Ricky had been so sure it was going to be a normal Halloween. Or as normal as a Halloween could be, given the circumstances. He’d put the finishing touches on Miya’s knight costume, which was mostly felt he’d very carefully cut out and hot glued onto a long-sleeved gray T-shirt, gotten in a quick morning workout, double-checked that Ana and Amelia had all the emergency numbers for when they took point on trick-or-treating, and then he headed off to do some work at Helping Hands before he was on duty for whatever shenanigans the Unsleeping City could cook up.
It turned out the Unsleeping City could cook up shenanigans that turned a guy younger than Ricky into someone closer to Kingston’s age, put him on an ancient carved chest from Poland, and had him rushing through subway cars so fast that his daughter’s book fell out of his bag and was lost on the tracks. Miya liked that it was maybe with vampires or ghosts or a big old Frankenstein, but that didn’t keep her occupied while Kingston worked on Cody and Emiko patched up everyone’s cuts and scrapes. Instead, Pete had to give her a piggyback ride while Esther tried to reason with Iga about the aforementioned chest.

"Well, when you text me ‘Please come immediately, I need help’, did you not expect me to show up as soon as possible? Pete, break it down. What’s going on?"
"I don't think I can do this, Kingston. I saw downstairs - there's so mаny people there! Why did I pick such a big fucking club for my first show?" The words spilled out of him the moment the door closed behind him, no longer making any attempt to keep up a facade of nervous excitement.

Ricky was mostly fine. He had a rip in the knee of his jeans and he smelled a little bit like if peppermint could go moldy, but his folks knew Santacon was going on. He could blame a lot on Santacon, and definitely would if given the opportunity. He raised a fist and knocked, loud enough that it would wake up his father if he was dozing on the couch.
Too loud, apparently, because when the door opened Ricky didn’t even get a glimpse of his father before a small shape barreled into his legs, almost knocking him over. “Hey, kiddo,” Ricky said, resting a tired hand flat on his daughter’s head. His father looked at him from the doorway, eyes swollen with sleep.
“She wouldn’t go to sleep in the bed,” he said, and didn’t sound even a little sorry. “She wanted to be ready for when you came back.”
