What if "Dragon Age: The Veilguard" was not stuck in such a development hell? What if Project Joplin had not wholly been abandoned? What if we truly had received a game more in line with the first three?
A hypothetical look into an alternate universe where the fourth Dragon Age had a tad fewer problems in its 10-year development cycle.
Disclaimer: I don't hate the game, I actually think it's quite great given the development hell Bioware went through in those 10 years. This is more of a hypothetical universe where there was less of that behind-the-scenes drama. Just a fun writing exercise.

She leaned her head against his chest, listening to the sound of his heart pounding beneath her cheek. She wanted to memorise the feeling, the sound, in case the mission went sideways. She hated herself for what she was about to ask him to do. “Ar isalan na to gara galin tor vis min goes telam.” I need you to get everyone out if this goes wrong.

I really wanted to expand on the feeling of regrets and how Solas uses that to manipulate Rook into taking his place. The consequences of Rook's choices will be featured and explored. I intend to recount the game and fill in some gaps, reintroduce lore from the old games and add scenes I thought were missing, like breaks after major missions (HELLO, ROMANCED COMPANION DURING PRISON OF REGRETS). It's as lore-accurate as possible to the old games, but I have taken some liberties. Characters from old games will have bigger roles to play. Rated E for eventual smut.

Noura De Riva is an assistant professor at a large and esteemed research university who is ready to move onto the next step in her career as a cultural anthropologist: Tenure, and subsequent lifetime security and peaceful existence at her job. However, this process is slowed down when Dr. Solas Wolfe caused a ruckus about a year ago at the field’s biggest academic conference, resulting in multiple firings, sabbaticals, and the rest of the Anthropology department to be left to clean up the pieces. On top of everything, her former mentor Varric Tethras is retiring right when she feels she needs him most.
The new department heads announce that the Anthropology and Archaeology departments will be merged for “strategic planning” and funding reasons, much to the dismay of all involved. On top of everything, Noura is paired with a professor in the other department, a Dr. Emmrich Volkarin, for the duration of the semester as required by the university.
“Oh no, he’s hot!” Ensues, academia is a mess, and nobody really knows what the hell “strategic planning” is anyway.
Let’s just say, there’s gonna be a lot of Bone if ya catch my drift ;)

Asaaranda was born into the Qun, when she was young, she bore a child who was taken from her to be raised by others. She never saw him again, and the loss left a lasting wound.
Years later, she served in a Qunari unit near the Tevinter border. An ambush wiped out her detachment, leaving her the only survivor. She was rescued by strangers . During her recovery, long-buried doubts surfaced, and she abandoned the Qun to live as Tal-Vashoth. Following the people who saved her, she eventually joined the Shadow Dragons.
Much later, Varric Tethras and Lace Harding sought help to stop Solas, whose plan to tear down the Veil. He planned to stop a blood ritual and free slaves. Asaaranda and a small team were sent to infiltrate the ritual site.
The mission fell into chaos. Forced into a split-second choice, she accidently caused the death of one of her own. Unable to remain with the Shadow Dragons, she left with Varric and Lace to help them in the fight against Solas.

9:54 Dragon: Archon Dorian Pavus gets word of a Venatori ritual in Arlathan Forest. Eager to stamp out the rest of the Venatori cult lurking on his doorstep, Dorian sends Rook and their companions to stop the ritual and kill the venatori. The ritual instead goes awry, separating Rook from their companions, and sending them back twelve years into the past. She closed her eyes, shutting out the thoughts that threatened to overtake her, this was obviously important. As she neared the headstone, she noticed small trinkets had been laid next to it: a carved statue of an owl, candles, dried sprigs of Lavender. Resting against the side of headstone was a shield, covered in dirt and what looked like dried blood- under the layers of grime was a silver Griffon, surrounded by a faded blue pigment. This was clearly the grave of somebody very well loved and well respected.
