Marina is an oddball in her pod, being the only siren/mermaid. Then she protects dive demons from the mermaids, causing the elders to damage her fin, leaving her unable to swim.
In guilt, the demons find a safe haven for her in shallow waters, and in return, she uses her siren voice to lure humans, whose souls they consume.
Their unusually high soul count, catches Gwi-Ma's attention, and she sends Jinu to investigate.
When he arrives, just in time to hear her alluring voice, enchanting him, causing him and the other saja boys to fall deeply in love with her.
Obsessed with possessing her, the five demons kill her original protectors, altering her memoires, making her alive they were the ones who saved her.
She pledges her loyalty to them and returns to the demon world with them, where they convince her to marry them.

How could she run away from the people she wanted nothing more than to spend her life close to.
She had been so close, so close to finally being able to fully lean into Zoey’s hugs, to taking off her long-sleeves during morning treadmill runs with Mira, to going to that damn bathhouse with them.
(She had been so close to being something good enough to let them see.)
