But on July 2nd, 2004, nothing could feel more foreign than the very place Jack Abbot called home.

This fic is about the incident that resulted in Jack’s amputation, and the life he’s thrust into after it. From navigating the emotional wreckage, ableism in all forms, physical changes, his life becoming flipped on it’s head, VA bureaucracy, and a whole other host of following factors; follow Jack learn to live with and eventually accept the cards he’s been dealt.

On the confidence course in 1990, Sergeant Sullivan told recruit Cope that there were no faggots in his Marine Corps. They both knew it was a lie, but that hadn't stopped it from becoming Cam's mantra since then. Even as it became clear that no Marine Corps that included Sullivan was without homosexuals. No faggots in the Marine Corps meant that Cam had to keep his shit locked down, just like Sullivan had told him to. So that's what he's done. Things got a bit easier in 1993 when "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" passed and the military stopped actively hunting the homosexuals in the ranks. Cam stopped pretending to be interested in dating women and settled quietly into government sanctioned, self imposed celibacy.
Now it's 2011, and with the repeal of "Don't Ask Don't Tell" Cam finds himself a 38 year old virgin on a boys trip to Vegas, and for the first time facing the prospect of having sex without needing to fear being found out, and two marine buddies determined to get him laid.

The article included both a transcription and a photograph of an old letter, never sent but finally unearthed from dusty archives by a nosy historian on the hunt for notoriety. Damaged by the ravages of war and time, it was still intact enough to get the gist: Bucky Barnes, venerated American hero, had written a love letter to a guy back home.
Public response to the letter’s been varied. Someone on Twitter very dryly pointed out that if the US had shipped sixteen-thousand men and women overseas, the fact that a few were gay shouldn’t be a surprise. There’s been some loud demands to remove mentions of Barnes from museums, to wipe his affiliation with their star-spangled icon from the history books. But by and large, no matter which side they stand on, everyone wants to know what the hell Captain America has to say about it.
