“We brought you somethin’ that might help with this here…” Alphonze paused for a moment, considering whether it was best to sugarcoat it or not. Gryffon, nude and sweat-damp and entirely unamused, raised an eyebrow. “Situation.”
He looked like a cub, then, his eyes wide as they found the bamboo, as though his field of vision had narrowed so far that he had not seen it before. Alphonze saw his hand twitch, as though meaning to reach out before thinking better of it. He would not make him ask. He handed over the bamboo, and Gryffon took it immediately, examining a stalk in disbelief before biting. It crunched between his teeth, and some of the tension bled from Gryffon’s shoulders as he chewed.
“Fuck,” he said through the mouthful, and Alphonze watched with fondness as Gryffon, after having hidden this weakness from the crew for as long as he could out of some concoction of protectiveness and shame, closed his eyes and gave in to relief.

Fourteen days, three hours, however many minutes. Sunken disks burned permanently into her face, hearing pulsing as she struggled to lock onto any one sound.
Every minute she lay there, rotting away, William’s fate ground lower, etching itself in stone.
Prying her eyes from their motionless state, she bore over the leather bound journal propped against the wall. Any information she could pull, ramblings of forest lights and cult tracking Nora knew she’d her William discuss before.
How could she go about her day, knowing William likely vanished from its light? Her stomach outgrew its growling, rejecting any offer of her fathers meals knowing William couldn't taste the same. The lump in her throat hardens as she swallows, fingernails bitten and bloody in her mouth.
Recent messages, saved videos, all dead ends. All slipping through her fingers. Roaches scurrying away beneath her feet.

Chip heard someone say something but ignored it, knowing they probably either weren’t talking to him or trying to get past him, so he just leaned a bit towards the railing and barely did anything else. It wasn’t like he was blocking the whole staircase. They could squeeze past him pretty easy, just like a few other people had in the past twenty-ish minutes.
“Hey, I’m talking to you.” A girl’s voice cut through his fog, her tone commanding respect in a way that had Chip sitting a bit more upright. He looked up to see a fiery-haired girl carrying what looked like the world's-most inconvenient-cardboard-box. She looked annoyed, and Chip had just enough sense to realize it was probably at him. “Can you find somewhere else to mope, maybe? People are trying to use these stairs.”
