Had Inuyasha not already shared that this gossip was months in the making, Rin would have assumed that was why her friends thought she had a lover: to Kagome’s way of thinking, inviting a particular person to Christmas was romantic.
Rin had invited Sesshoumaru.
But Christmas was many things, and Rin understood that it was also meant to be celebrated with friends. And although Kagome reliably hosted Christmas seven days before the New Year, spoke of Rin’s coming home as though it were natural and easy, if Rin were to leave the village with Sesshoumaru, she had no way of knowing when she might return. Their travels would take them far and wide, on unpredictable paths and on unforeseeable new adventures. To set aside a single day might not be feasible. Nevertheless, Rin wanted at least one Christmas where all of her friends gathered together as one instead of the two belligerent groups she knew they really were.
