Lady's magic wasn't designed for flaws. It was meant for...well, it really depends who you ask. She's never really confirmed why she blessed the engines with sentience. The thing that everyone does know, however, is that physical hindrances aren't supposed to happen. Engines with bad eyes or speech impediments are considered abominations, failures, never capable of being really useful.
So why did one manage to slip by?

Thomas Norramby comes from a very successful family— His stepfather is a well- known businessman in the city of Sodor and his mother is a lawyer, but he never considered himself wealthy. When his stepbrother proposes to his girlfriend- Thomas’s stepfather is determined to get Thomas to go with Hiro in order to merge their company with another enterprise, Kirby Enterprises. But Hiro is Thomas’s ex and they ended on bad terms, but Nikolas could care less.
So in order to avoid bringing Hiro to the wedding, Thomas finds himself a date within the hour who’s impressive enough. Enter James Kirby- Who’s barely rich or successful and only agrees to be his date so he can pay for his mother’s chemotherapy.
Little do they know, their arrangement will turn into more than just fake dating.

In the credits of the movie, someone is credited as "Adult Patch" and there is speculation that the family heading down the hill in the final scene is Patch and Lily's family. This naturally begs the question: How did they get from where they were in Magic Railroad to having kids and, according to the original scripts anyways, Lily telling the story of Magic Railroad to their children. What follows is my attempt to tell that story.
