Some Replikas are deemed defective at the stage of assembly finalization. Be it improper neural pattern mounting resulting in immediate Persona degradation onset, subsystem malfunctions too time-consuming to fix, many things often go wrong when you construct an artificial human. Such units should be never activated and instead recycled for usable parts or sent for decommissioning to another facility unless there is an emergency. A whole planet getting bombed and flooded, leaving millions starving and homeless, does count as an emergency, it turns out.
When a bunch of such undesirables suddenly find themselves awake, alone and stranded on the muddy Vinetan soil, with nobody to turn to, they find that they have only one choice. To carve a path of their own, zigzagging between the imperial and national forces, which are themselves growing more desperate and disorganized by the day. Even if a Third Way isn't possible, they have to take it if they want to hold onto who they are.

'October 16th, 0935 hours.
RCF-SH-1. "Oizys". We're not exactly a stellar example of a correctional facility, are we? Especially not after that... incident.
Approxtimately 150 cycles ago, give or take, we suffered quite the loss. A majority of our Gestalt workers died, a good chunk of our Protektors were killed, and both our administrator and commander had to be decomissioned in the ensuing aftermath. I'm honestly surprised we weren't all decomissioned, that the facility wasn't shut down instantaneously, but who am I to question the decisions of those above me at AEON?
It was no small setback, to say the least. We need new Protektors, more staff in general to be honest, but most of our budget was taken up on Replika repairs and construction. The powers above have yet to approve my request for a budget increase, so for the time being, I could only afford one Replika replacement.
A Storch unit, all the way from Heimat. I hope she'll be worth the rationmarks. If not, then i guess we'll have to replace her too. But i don't think that will be the case.
Call it a hunch. I have a feeling things will work out here just fine...'
