The words echo in Vegas’s head the entire time they’re in the hospital. Pete has never mentioned kids before, never breathed a single word about them. And now this. Now, this tiny creature who he set in Vegas’s arms as if Vegas was meant to know what to do with it.
Eventually, they leave the new parents alone, heading back to their home. In the car, Vegas taps his fingers on the steering wheel and tries to think of the right words, ones that aren’t going to set off that fierce, stubborn streak Pete has. Ones that will appeal to the good boy who lets Vegas decide everything.
What comes out is, “You know we can’t really have a baby, right?”
It is entirely the wrong thing to say. Pete turns on him with a frown, eyes narrowed. “And why not, exactly? We’re young. We’re healthy.”
We’re insane, Vegas doesn’t say, because he does have some self-preservation instincts.
