Summary
Mars had two of the smallest known moons in the entire Solar System.
Mars knew his moons could handle themselves, they weren't stupid and they always had each other if things got too bad, but- he couldn't help his worry. Not only were they small, but the two were also reckless. They often seemed to forget to be careful, forget their size and all Mars had to do was look away for a second before something could go wrong-
He knew his moons weren't weak. He knew they weren't helpless or pitiful, he knew they could handle themselves-
But when your opponent is who knows how many times your size- well. They could only do so much.
Or
Mars is painfully aware of how small his moons are.
That knowledge brings him no favor during and after the game of asteroid dodgeball against Planet X- especially when he can't find his moons.

Summary
Based on the fact Deimos knew what the Roche Limit was in the Solar System Trials Part 1 and the theorized fate of Phobos. In 50 million years, Phobos is expected to be destroyed as it approaches Mars' Roche Limit, it getting closer to the planet as time moves on. While Deimos drifting further away and may eventually leave Mars' orbit.
Or: a little brother having to live with the knowledge of how his family is doomed to end, and how he chooses to push forward.
Deimos knows what the Roche Limit is. And he hopes his brother doesn't (hopes he'd never have to), because the last thing he wants to do is speed up the destruction of the family he has. Because he may be the smallest in the three, but that doesn't mean he can't carry some of this weight.

Mars missed his best friend. It was as simple as that, really. How did that lead to him having the smallest and most hyper moons in existence?
OR
After the fateful collision, Mars dealt with his grief over Proto's death by snatching two asteroids from the asteroid belt, which would later become his two moons. A little bittersweet, but the ending is funny, I promise!
Based on this Tumblr post by @nightsuneclipse: "What if Mars pulled two asteroids from the belt and played with them like toys? He would pretend they were Proto and himself, making up scenarios about how things could've been different. Projecting so much comfort and pain onto these two asteroids, becoming sentimental toward them so he kept them in his orbit."

Earth's voice seems to snap Mars out of whatever trance he was in. He gives Earth a sheepish smile as he runs the back of his neck.
"Yeah, sorry. Just thinking."
"About?"
"Ah... Well..." Mars looks back at the piano, hands wringing as he searches for the words. "When Astrodude was on my surface he brought one of these. It was a lot bigger than this one but I'm sure it was the same thing."
Earth takes a seat on the piano bench. "He brought a grand piano? How did he manage to fit that on his ship?"
"Piano? Is that what this is?" Earth nods and Mars continues his thought. "Astrodude played his piano. It was... nice to listen to. Now that piano is gone and... I don't think I'll ever hear a piano again."
