Fruit went tumbling out of a basket she was carrying, and Link scurried to help her pick them up. “I’m so sorry!”
Link looked up to finally get a good look at her, his eyes meeting hers and then proceeding to widen. “Malon?”
She shook her head. “Sorry, you must have me confused with someone else."
...All the familiar faces that Link has met over the years have some meaning to him, one way or another. From the guy who reminds him of his uncle, to the simpering girl who looks like a crazy one he met on an uncharted island, to eight others wearing versions of his own face. One in particular, though, meant more to him than any other in any world or era.

“None of us are,” Warriors laughed wetly.
“Just accept it, you grump,” Wild chuckled, helping pull their veteran back into the group hug.
Legend’s face grew redder, and then he was hiding his face in Warriors’s scarf.
And then, they had parted, eyes red and faces blotchy, and Four almost laughed at the sudden discovery that they were all ugly criers.
Four looked at the portal waiting for him, waiting to take him home. He cast one last look over his shoulder at his brothers, ingraining their faces into his memory, and then he stepped through.

The Hero of Time himself knew that well, despite that though, he knew the memories of the people he met during his journey through time with them would never be completely forgotten. Link feels like he’s forgetting something.
There are names on the tip of his tongue that he just can't quite recall. Trinkets in his bag that don’t belong to him, scars he’s not sure when he got, tendencies and habits he’s never had before.
Really, he’s been living in his house for a year now. Why is his first instinct to pull out a bedroll at night? It takes him an extra second at dinnertime to remember he has to actually get up and cook it-- what’s that all about? Since when, on his harp, do his fingers drift to notes by muscle memory of tunes he’s never heard of?
But he’s solved a few puzzles in his time. He’s solved seven-- no, six-- (seven? Where’d that number come from?)-- six adventures’ worth of them. And that’s more than enough to figure this single one out.
Write down for the history books that the Hero of Legend is nothing if not curious, and nothing if not determined.
Or: in which the timeline's gotta pretend to stay intact somehow. They all get around it anyways.
