Urplötzlich tauchte der Ball in seinem Blickfeld auf. Charlies Muskeln spannten sich an, er machte sich bereit den Ball zu fangen und loszurennen, als ohne Vorwarnung Nick vor ihm auftauchte. Der ältere Junge schnappte sich den Ball, warf seinem Freund einen Blick zu, den dieser nicht ganz deuten konnte, und rannte davon. Bevor er jedoch weit kam, rauschte ein dunkler Schatten knapp an Charlie vorbei, Nick dicht auf den Fersen, und tackelte ihn zu Boden.

Charlie felt bad. He didn't like letting people down, and he certainly didn't like letting Mr. Ajayi down. He sighed, seriously annoyed with himself now.
When he walked past Mr. Ajayi's desk at the end of the lesson, ready to leave the school day behind and change into his rugby gear, he slowly started feeling better. The prospect of seeing Nick always made him feel better. But even that felt tainted today, as if a dark cloud was trying to drown out the ray of sunshine in his life that was Nick. Charlie shuddered involuntarily.
“Anything I can help you with?” Mr. Ajayi's voice was soft and sympathetic, and with a sudden uncomfortable feeling that he had never before felt in the presence of his arts teacher Charlie realised that all the other students had already left, leaving the two of them alone. He lowered his eyes to the ground and shook his head in silence.
This had always been his safe space.
It didn't feel like that today.

Nick’s mobile woke him up.
He used to be able to sleep through anything, mobiles, storms, his brother stomping around the house, his Mum vacuuming, but since being with Charlie he’s developed the ability to wake up with a single mobile call. All it took was the familiar melody of his ringtone and Nick was instantly awoken, from however deep a slumber.
He was a little disoriented as he reached out for his mobile, almost knocking it off the table in his confused haste, but managed to grab it before it fell, bringing the screen to his face.
The name that came up, Chell, was Charlie’s roommate and friend. Just seeing it set Nick's entire body on fire.
“What’s wrong?” he asked the second he hit Answer.
“Charlie’s fine,” Chell said right away, apparently knowing Nick was going to be midspiral, because why would she call him in the middle of the night if something wasn’t wrong with Charlie?
“Chell,” he gasped out. “What happened?"
“He’s at the A&E right now, he got, well, he got banged up a bit. Someone called 999 and the fight got broken up pretty quickly but the guy was big, Nick, he got a few licks.”

Nick looks at himself in the mirror and sees a plasticine doll. Perfect hair, good grades, sporty, popular. How did he turn into this? When did the boy he used to be dissolve into this kind of shell? Harry and the lads chuck paper balls and random shit at that Year 10, Tao Xu, who always fires back. Nick watches and listens and wishes he could make himself stop them.
Then one day, in his new form room, a boy with bright eyes and dark curls says hi. Suddenly, everything changes.
Hallo. This is a series of vaguely connected vignettes of basically Nick Nelson angst/whump and a good bit of fluff, because I’ve read the books and I saw the show and I know most of the angst is concentrated on Charlie (and while I’m NOT saying that Charlie’s story isn’t important, I’m simply pointing out that maybe I wanna be cruel and see some Nick angst too but not many fics are that so I wrote it meself). It's not too violent (just the typical boys fighting) because I'm focusing on Nick's internal journey. Also there's some nightmares that have blood in them. TW's throughout in the notes!
