Summary
Jack needs new boots. This is what he thinks as a puddle of water seeps out of them with each step into the Bronx lodging house. He bought these ones two years ago and now they just barely fit his feet. He must have had one last growth spurt in the past years since he saved up to buy them.
Considering how rough this past winter was, they had definitely withered more. The steel toe cap lifted up from the sole every time he took a step.

"The Brooklyn leader was washed by a wave of thankfulness for Jack as he watched the other boy's face scrunched in agony.
Knowing it could have easily been his boyfriend lying there on the bed (or worse) turned Spot's stomach. He couldn't shake the terror that thought brought him.
The problem was that it wasn't an absurd thought. It could still happen, Race was now the active leader of Manhatten, and Spot did not doubt that Snider would not hesitate to use him as an example, same as he did with Jack."

Tired of Jack's bullshit, Spot barges in when Jack is holed away and gets way more than he ever bargained for. His plans are completely forgotten but this is more important than catching the train could ever be.

Now that they had a plan in place all they had to do was set it in motion. The only problem was that they knew they wouldn't stand a chance without Brooklyn at their backs. Unfortunately, that meant that Jack needed to talk to Spot and they haven't seen each other since the disaster back at the rally which has left resentment festering between them.
Luckily for Jack his boys refuse to let him travel to Brooklyn alone knowing that the tensions were so high. All he has to do is convince Spot that he wasn't a rotten scab. That couldn't be too hard, right? Who was he kidding, he was a dead man walking.

He was right and Spot broke his stare to turn to Race, “You like music?”
Race wracked his mind for an answer. He didn't really listen to music— Sure he liked it so his prior answer wasn’t technically a lie. But what if he named a genre that Spot couldn’t stand, or thought was lame? And naming an artist was even riskier, Spot probably wouldn’t be impressed if he answered with Taylor Swift.
His saving grace came when he noticed Spot’s shirt, which he presumed was a merch of a band. He tried not to stare too long at the stretched yellow letters that spelled out the band's name across Spot’s chest.
“I like Led Zeppelin,” Race blurted and he prayed he’d read the shirt correctly.
