After a brief flash of hurt, a stray feeling of neglect striking a match in his mind, he decides his initial assessment had been correct, and he does not care about whatever that damn letter says. Even if it says the entire royal guard’s been assigned to watch over Sarah, even if there are four knights in the royal guard and four members of the royal family outside of Ward. “I didn’t really expect otherwise,” he mumbles. It’s too sincere, so he follows up with, “It’s bullshit, it always is. If anyone needs more than one guard, it’s him.”
Or: Ward is the ruler of a powerful kingdom. There are constant attempts on his life that he always manages to evade. When an attempt finally succeeds, Rafe is thrown into the fray of being king, a responsibility that he at first takes on with open arms—until he realizes the assassination attempts have also been passed down to him. Sarah, with the four knights assigned to protect her at her disposal, takes matters into her own hands.
