She gives him this look that says are you stupid? that makes him raise his hands defensively.
“Jaime,” She sighs, and she looks tired all the sudden, like she’s about to pack up the book she’s put on the seat next to her and leave and never let him speak to her again, “Girls like me don’t get to wear the pretty dresses and figure skate.”
“I’d skate with you.” He doesn't know where that comes from, but he’s definitely not going to take it back. It’s the truth, after all, even if it came out so much more boldly than he’d intended.
“You couldn't even lift me to your shoulder.”
“You wanna bet?” He taunts, but it's playful and it breaks the sad film over her eyes, “I do a lot of weightlifting. Could probably lift Podrick as high as I lift Cersei.”

By the time he’s made the connection, she’s out of the door, swords and all, nearing her horse and searching for something in her bag. Jaime runs out, and who cares if he hasn’t eaten shit in two days, he can’t let her leave.
“Wait,” he says, “wait, you’re Brienne of Tarth, aren’t you -”
“If,” she interrupts him, her voice suddenly turning cold, “the name Bitterbridge leaves your mouth, I’m leaving you to bleed out on the side of the road.”
Jaime shuts his mouth at once.
People do call her Slayer of Bitterbridge. The story everyone tells is that the local king had called her to get rid of a witch that was causing havoc in his land and that she had killed him, half of his court and half of the villagers.
It was only a year ago or so.
Looking at her, she doesn’t seem like a slayer at all.
“I was about to say that I’m impressed, but do keep on assuming the worst of everyone.”

By month four, she knows she’s… well. Calling it crushing on him would be ridiculous — she’s not fourteen anymore, thank fuck, and she wouldn’t go back to it even if they paid her to.
Too bad that the not-fourteen-year-old way to say it is that she’s in love with him and in the hopeless kind of way.
Well, fuck that. She’s learned to act throughout her life and she’s not ever risking another birthday party accident ever again, she’ll keep on acting and survive it. She got good at it, after all, if Renly never suspected.
If she’s lucky, Jaime won’t either, and if he finds out… well. She supposes she’ll just hope that he’ll be cool about it, forget it and they’ll be back to being friends a moment later. But if she’s lucky, she’s never going to have to deal with it.
She usually is not lucky, but — she was when she decided to not clam up as usual when it came to Jaime. At least they’re friends, after all.
Maybe she will be again.

“She gave me three different types of damned bleach,” Jaime sighs. Brienne looks at them and at the ruined laundry – it’s not too bad of a mess after all, so she picks a medium-strength one. Then she heads for the detergents rack, grabs the right kind of soap and a box of fabric softener.
“Here,” she says when she comes back. “Soap for whites, medium strength bleach, and put also some of this. If it fails and you have to put that stuff on just when you’re at home at least it should be comfortable to wear. And put it on sixty degrees, it’s plenty enough. For the dark stuff, there’s a specific cycle. For colors, not higher than forty. And never use bleach if there are no white clothes. Clear?”
“Clear. If that PhD doesn’t work out for you, you have a future in explaining laundry to other people.”
