    Summary

Hob Gadling has lived through six centuries of history, and he’s collected more jobs than most people can imagine—mercenary, printer, pirate, mob boss, even a rock musician for a spell. But the one role that feels like home is the one he holds now: Professor Robin Golding, Medieval History, London.

Through lectures about chimneys and buttons, cups of tea at Nina’s café, banter with colleagues, and evenings in his pub, Hob reflects on the small things that shape lives. The inventions that go unnoticed, the food that feels miraculous after centuries of hunger, the city of London itself. And underneath it all, the quiet, stubborn hope that maybe one day his Stranger will walk through the door again.

A story about teaching, eating, laughing, waiting, and living—all the little things that keep Hob going.

    Summary

When an exorcism goes horribly wrong (as they so often do), Johanna Constantine really does not expect the corpse to laugh at her morbid jokes and get to its feet again afterwards. Hob Gadling, in turn, does not expect that his new friendship with a feisty exorcist and magician will lead to him not only learning the name of his Stranger, but to them running into each other in Johanna's ex-girlfriend's flat. Nor does he expect how changed he will find Dream to be after his long absence...

    Summary

Hob has been around death. Living in London throughout multiple plague outbreaks and fires, as well as making a living soldiering and dabbling in banditry, will do that to you. What he doesn't know is that Death has been around Hob as well. He has no idea that when his Stranger left him that night in 1389 after their first meeting, the woman who came up to him, laid a hand on his shoulder and said, “Good luck, friend,” was Death incarnate.

Hob doesn’t know that he is one of few things in this world that has been Touched by Death and lived. Had he known this, he might not have been as confused as he is when his body slams into the floor of a dim, candle-lit cellar and he finds himself surrounded by hooded figures and a gold circle on the floor. That is all he manages to perceive before everything goes blurry and consciousness slips away from him again.

    Here in the Darkness.

Roderick Burgess' spell does not summon Death, but someone who has been touched by Death. Hob Gadling ends up in his cellar instead of Dream.

Ric laughs, humorless. “You know, the ancients believed in inspiration made manifest – Muses, goddesses of the arts.”
Hob is very well aware. “They weren’t as daft as people think. Why not say a prayer? Maybe you’ll get an answer.”
“Muses wouldn’t have patience for a fool like me,” Ric dismisses. Hob knows the feeling; he’s astounded Calliope's stuck around this long. “Do you know Erasmus Fry?”

    Summary

When Hob spots a sad woman in white through a window of a famous author's house, he gets a bad feeling. Further investigation reveals that she's in need of rescue, but what Hob isn't prepared for is the fact that the woman he sets out to save turns out to be a literal Greek goddess, the ex-wife of the Stranger he keeps waiting for, and a rather lovely person to boot.

    Summary

The Endless is seconds away from revealing himself to the foul men (he imagines, perhaps, adorning himself with claws so that he can tear them limb from limb) when a strikingly familiar voice stills him in place with dread.

"Do you have to act so bloody smug, Madoc?" Hob Gadling's voice blares like a tornado warning inside of Dream's skull.

    ***

Having received Calliope’s request for aid, Dream of the Endless finds himself in Richard Madoc’s flat whilst the man is in the process of making a deal with a heartbreakingly familiar immortal.

Meanwhile, Hob Gadling’s attempt to liberate a certain muse from her confinement goes completely awry with the addition of his long lost eldritch companion.

    Summary

He slams the volume shut and tries not to glare at Lucienne. “This has no place in the Library.”
“It appeared with the unsent letters, my lord,” she tells him, undaunted.
“For a reason, Lucienne,” Dream insists. “She did not send them.”
Whatever Calliope wrote, she clearly hadn’t wanted him – him, of all people – to see them.
“But she intended to, Lord Morpheus,” Lucienne counters patiently. “They were meant to be sent and read – and most of them are addressed to you.”
    -
in which dream of the endless finds letters calliope could not send, is faced with her trauma and his own, and does not understand why hob gadling always feeds him.

    Summary

The last person Dream expects to see in Burgess' basement is Hob Gadling, who has apparently been asked to consult on the restoration of the historic manor. He is pleased when his old acquaintance helps free him without a second thought, despite their past squabble, but he is horrified to realise that breaking the binding circle does nothing to return his powers to him, and that he cannot return to the Dreaming after having been released from his cage.

Weak, confused, and distressingly human, he consents to being taken back to Hob's home to be cared for until he can regain his strength. When he falls asleep that night (which he should never have had need for), he finally finds his way back to his palace, only to find someone else sitting on his throne, wearing his ruby, and claiming his name as her own — Dream of the Endless.

"Dream," Calliope whispers, her face drawn with the same shock the Endless feels.

The man's name ricochets off of the modest apartment walls. The singular word threatening in its utterance to tear them all apart.

He watches the moment register on Hob Gadling's face.

"Dream?” the name falls in dreaded repetition from the mortal’s lips, his eyes grow wide with understanding.

    "You know each other?"
