Aredhel thinks she's got everything as she wants it, but Turgon has his reasons for allowing her to leave the city and he's not above using manipulation. Glorfindel and Ecthelion are caught in the middle of a political ploy and poor Egalmoth is dragged along for the ride. Throw in some giant spiders and everything was bound to go to hell.

The city of Gondolin is at peace, and yet several of its citizens harbour resentments, ambitions, and unnatural desires: Maeglin longs to assume his rightful position as Turgon's heir and Idril's spouse; Salgant hopes to avenge himself for past humiliations; and Ecthelion and Glorfindel indulge in deception even as they devote their lives to duty.
Many secrets will be revealed, but only slowly and with much confusion, in this comedy of misunderstandings.

This takes place directly after A Midsummer Night's Dance, so if you haven't read it, I recommend doing so. You can read this without reading the first, but you may be a little confused. In this one, Glorfindel battles issues with his father and courts Erestor- or, rather, tries to. Meanwhile, snakes lie in Gondolin's streets, and their safety may not be as assured as they believe.

Summary
Having survived the fall of Gondolin, Maeglin pulls some strings with management to secure the freedom of his friend Salgant. They are both put to work in the Great Forge of Angband, under the supervision of Sauron himself.
Salgant learns a trade, he and Maeglin both come to terms with the changing future of Beleriand, Sauron waxes hopeful about the end of the war, and healing happens in unlikely places.Revenge isn't nearly as sweet as candied chestnuts.
