Astrid sighed as she finished painting Stormfly’s snout and went to adjust the butterfly-shaped mask she’d coloured around her own eyes. It wasn’t that she wasn’t happy for Hiccup. It was just that she was a Hofferson, and Hoffersons had quite a competitive streak in their nature, stronger than that of most other Berkian families. So by default, she loved winning. She craved the glory that success could bring. The praise. The medals. Call her ruthless, merciless, even, but there was no changing who she was.
When Astrid was done, she glanced over her shoulder to see Hiccup with a bucket of red dye at his side, painting a diamond atop Toothless’s nose. She dug her teeth into her lower lip, an idea forming in her mind. She wasn’t proud of herself for it, but if it meant she would win, just this once, she certainly wanted to see it through.
Of course, it involved a certain son of Stoick the Vast and his not-so-secret secret crush on her…

That, along with years of dragon-riding in the wind, had made it tousled, and attractively so. When she reached the area where his hair curled at his neck, she took a strand between her fingers and split it into three sections. Carefully, she started braiding them- over, under, over, under. His hair was fairly easy to work with- not tangled at all.
“You took them out?” she asked softly, tilting her neck to meet his eyes.
