Dopo quello che è successo, gli arriva come una sorpresa l’idea che qualcuno possa toccarlo con delicatezza.
“Devo disinfettare i tagli,” annuncia, con una voce che è poco più di un sussurro, come se stesse cercando di rassicurare un animale ferito restio a lasciarsi soccorrere. “Farà un po’ male.”
Manuel annuisce, o almeno ci prova. “Seh. Lo so.”

“Non le piace rendermi le cose semplici, eh?” chiede.
In risposta, Manuel emette una risata. Se solo non si trattasse della sua nemesi universitaria e soggetto su cui si concentra la maggior parte dei suoi istinti omicidi da un mese a questa parte, Simone quasi penserebbe che è qualcosa di bello da ascoltare.
Invece, si limita ad aggrottare le sopracciglia e ad assumere un’espressione indispettita, come se Manuel Ferro gli avesse fatto un torto ad essere vagamente piacevole.
“E che divertimento ce sarebbe altrimenti? E poi è così facile farte ‘ncazza’, manco me devo sforza’.” Gli rifila un buffetto affettuoso sul viso. La mano indugia per un attimo contro la sua pelle, inaspettatamente gentile. “Dai, Bale’, non metterme il muso, sei più bello quando sorridi.”

His hand rests on Kendall’s back, holding him in; his head rests in the crook of his neck. Stewy breathes in, closes his eyes, breathes out.
For a moment, everything is still. It's the closest they’ll ever come to peace, probably.
