I can see it: my emaciated body, clinging to the last dredges of life, with barely the strength left to breathe. The bruising peppering my skin. The holes in my mouth where my teeth have come loose. The curve of my softened skull where my hair has fallen away. A form so sunken that it’s nearly indistinguishable from the sheets that envelope it, yet despite this the shaking still comes, futilely fighting off the chill that emanates from deep within its core. Not a person anymore.
How long will that take? I wonder. How long will I be able to claim that I am still alive, still here, still real? How long before I forget the fundamental parts of myself? Will it be quicker, if I’ve already done it before? Can this vision of me still be counted as an iteration of Ryland Grace?

“No,” Rocky says immediately, cutting him off. “Grace sick. Grace hurt. But Grace no die.”
Grace nods. “I wouldn’t have gotten through this without you.”
Rocky dabs the tears around his eyes away. “Rocky would not be here without Grace.”

Summary
Set in an alternate universe where the Hail Mary returns to Earth (don't worry, Rocky's fine), Grace finds himself swept up in his own rescue and recovery process with none other than Eva Stratt by his side.
The Hail Mary lies scattered somewhere in the wintery woods of Russia. Snow drifts from the night sky, sizzling in the small fires that adorn the wreckage.
Grace lies nearby in a hazy daze, still strapped into the captain’s chair but no longer in the control room. It is gone, reduced to shrapnel during the tail end of his clumsy plummet back to the surface.

Summary
Grace hasn't set an alarm ever since he stopped working at the school to research the astrophage. He's kind of a morning person, anyway, and the scientists he works with don't really care about what time he woke up. He stays late most days, too.
So what is that annoying beeping?
The memories flood in suddenly. The explosion, the meeting, multiple people chasing him. Being tackled to the ground, held down as the world faded.
Fight or flight kicks in immediately, but he finds he cannot move, just managing a sharp inhale behind the oxygen mask that he feels is strapped to his face.

“So, I was thinking about why I’ve been throwing up. I think some of it is the actual, physical properties of the taumoeba, but I honestly think half the battle is the taste. See, humans use smell and taste to tell us if food is going to make us sick, like it’s moldy or smells weird, that sends a signal for disgust to our brains to stop us from eating it, and that triggers nausea.”
“I feel this way about all human food,” I say, and Grace rolls its eyes.
“Sure. But I think my brain is being overprotective about the taumoeba. It’s the same reason why human kids get picky or people throw up during pregnancy, even when the food they’re eating is perfectly edible. My brain is signalling to me that I shouldn’t want it in my body, mostly because -- well, I don’t. It smells like mildew and algae and has the texture of chia seed pudding that was forgotten at the back of a fridge. But that’s making me nauseous when I even think about putting it in my mouth, which makes me more likely to throw up.”
“But how would you eat without using your mouth?” I ask.
Grace grins at me. “That, my friend, is exactly the question I’ve been asking myself. And I think the answer might be something called a nasogastric tube."

Summary
As their journey to Erid nears its end, Grace allows himself to feel hopeful about the future. The Hail Mary has survived far longer than she was ever intended to, Rocky is practically vibrating with excitement about returning home, and Grace has more or less managed to stave off the worst effects of malnutrition. Things seem to be going well.
Until he wakes up one morning with a fever and a harsh cough and is granted a stark reminder of just how fragile his human body truly is.

The story explores an alternate version of the Hail Mary Mission preparation in which Stratt does not keep Grace sedated. Forced to remain conscious through the medical procedures meant to prepare his body for three years in coma, Grace has to cooperate under fear, pain, and coercion. The story focuses on the psychological and ethical tension between violation and care, survival and consent, and the team’s attempt to keep him functional without pretending that cooperation means agreement.

Grace is unprepared for the level of love that all of Erid seemed to have for him. It was vaguely terrifying, but also.... nice? To be cared for. To be wanted.
It gets worse when they find out the circumstances of him ending up on the Hail Mary.
When his declining health necessitates a trip back to Earth, he is faced with a planet that loves him so fiercely and wonderfully that it finally starts to break through his crippling lack of self worth and bloom into something incredible.
And Earth? Earth has to deal with an Erid that is polite, protective, and most of all, pissed.

Summary
Morbid, that's what this is, and I don't want it to be.
I'll leave this part out of any memoirs, I guess, just mention it in passing. If there is any time to write memoirs: if Rocky gets me to Erid alive, and he and his fellow alien scientists are able to engineer some way to keep me functioning, then I'll jot this all down in their language and mine for posterity's sake. I've gotten used to chronicling. If I could get this story to Earth, everybody would line up in the bookstores to get their hands on it. They might even forgive me my faults. I'd read my book, too, but mostly for Rocky. He's easy to get attached to.
Not feeling like I'll have much time left for my memoirs today, though.I read Project Hail Mary last year but was thinking again about the period of time on the journey back to Erid where Ryland becomes malnourished and seriously ill and I wanted to write a couple scenes about it. Literary references included for my own enjoyment.

Rocky. I can’t put this all on the guy right now. He should be happy. We are going to Erid. We are going to save his planet.
“CBC. A complete blood count.” I answer, hoping he doesn’t ask me why.
“Purpose, question?”
Rocky, please. I’m trying to spare you right now.
Basically, Grace gets exposed to a dangerous amount of radiation during an EVA and doesn't want to tell Rocky bc of what happened to Rocky's crew <3
THIS IS A REWORKED VERSION OF "TEMPEST" - after some comments, I wanted to keep the soul of the story, but make it more scientifically plausible. While there are still probably some inaccuracies, I still hope this isn't as messy as before.

Summary
Alternate take on the post-fishing scene/CH20, where Rocky saves Grace and Grace returns the gesture by saving Rocky and exposing himself to superheated ammonia.
Blazing hot ammonia flooded the airlock and dormitory. I slammed the airlock door behind me and spun the lock. Hissing erupted on the other side, loud and violent, but I couldn’t see anything anymore. Can’t even breathe.
The ammonia had hit me straight on. No cover. No shielding. Certainly no glasses on my face to protect my eyes even a little. Just superheated ammonia directly to the face like the universe personally decided I’d gone too long since I’d last suffered five minutes ago.
I’m screaming, I thought. Or maybe gurgling. Hard to tell when my throat felt like it’s being flayed open from the inside. I hit the floor hard, writhing as fire tore through my lungs and airways. Every breath felt like inhaling knives.

Summary
Years after Belos' defeat and the alliance with the Collector, things have settled into a new normal. Amity and Luz are married and have a young daughter named Azura. Hunter and Willow have also married and have just found out that they are going to become parents!
Hunter looks back on the events leading up to the birth of his and Willow's first child.
Triggered by outside influences which stir fear and doubt within him, Hunter wonders if he is incapable of being a good father given the nature of his own upbringing.
As the pressure builds, Hunter will need to lean on the support of his found family and friends to make it through unsolicited advice, planning a surprise baby shower and the public’s fascination with his past life under Belos in order to protect what is most precious to him.
