"I know you do. You're a freak like that." Tim rolls his eyes. Slow, dramatic footsteps approach the door. A shudder of anticipation crawls down his spine. "Well, well, well." Jason's voice is rough gravel, modulated into something harsh and mechanical by his mask. "What do we have here?"
Tim cranes his neck, getting a look at the wall of muscle that is the Red Hood leaning against the door frame, arms crossed. The muzzle-style red mask and domino cover his face, but Tim can feel the smoldering leer underneath. He feels his cheeks heat under the scrutiny, shoulders tensing.
Jason steps forward like he's got all the time in the world, head cocked at the sight before him. "How'd such a pretty little bird end up snared in my trap?"

Summary
The door at the bottom of the stairs is ajar. There’s nothing but darkness visible beyond, even through the night vision in his helmet. Jason pushes it open a few inches with a cautious hand.
From somewhere in the darkness, something starts to hiss.
The hair on the back of Jason’s neck stands up. It’s a low, inhuman rattle of a sound, something in between a rattlesnake’s warning and the buzz of an insect in your walls, stinger ready. He pushes the door the rest of the way.
Movement, near the bed, a shifting of shadows. Reflective eyes flare candle-bright in the night vision.
Jason takes a deep breath. He undoes the latches on his helmet, lifting it off his head.
The hissing ceases abruptly.
He stares blindly into the dark, very aware of the pounding of his heart. “Tim?” he says quietly.

But Jason didn’t need to know who he was to hate his guts. Tim was always holding his breath. Waiting. Filled with anticipation.
He'd spent most of his childhood that way, alone in Drake Manor hoping his parents would come home soon, crouched behind air conditioning units on top of buildings for the bats to fly by, sitting at a school desk watching the clock more sharply than paying attention to a teacher, clipping film to clothesline to dry and hoping he'd gotten a good shot. So Tim had made a game of it. He'd try to hold his breath for as long as he could while completing a task, just to see how far he could get.
It was easy for simple things, like doing dishes or math problems. It was much, much harder for others. But some things? Some things it made exquisite.

It was the third in a row his parents forgot or just couldn’t be there, ‘something came up, we can do something when we get back’. It’s what they said every time and then forgets all over again when they did come back.
