Other ships in Starfleet push the frontier. They explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, boldly go where no man has gone before. We scour the ash heap of history. We search for the failures, the civilizations that lost the war against entropy, the dead planets and extinct species. And then we dig through the rubble to try and find out what happened.

It’s not exactly the most popular mission in Starfleet.

Few historical events are as well-memorialized as the Banishment of Prince Zuko. One of the pivotal events in the conclusion of the Hundred Year War, Prince Zuko’s scarring and exile led directly to the overthrow of Fire Lord Ozai, the return of the Avatar to world-prominence, and the collapse of Fire Nation’s century-long grasp for global domination. Since then, the dramatic denouncement of the familial feud has been portrayed countless thousands of times—in books, plays, radio dramas, and movies—and remains a staple of historical education in most schools. But is it possible that we’ve all gotten the story wrong?

It is perhaps not too surprising then, that much controversy continues to exist over the precise causes of the War. The Fire Nation’s attack on its neighbors was a massively impactful event, and almost since the very day that Sozin’s Comet appeared in the sky, people have been debating the whys and wherefores. What could have brought such a sudden and bloody end to centuries of peace? What could have motivated one of the Four Nations to suddenly, and without apparent provocation, aspire to world domination and universal monarchy? This paper will not attempt to essay a conclusive answer. Instead, it will present a précis of several of the most influential and well-regarded theories, in the hopes that it will help scholars and laypersons better understand the terms of the debate.

SUMMARY: In 1989, with the Cold War ending, the Earth seemed on the brink of a Golden Age. By 2053, 30% of the human population had been annihilated, and the planet was hovering on the edge of collapse into premodern conditions. In 2063, First Contact with extraterrestrial life was made, for the first time. In 2083, a planetary-wide world government was established for the first time, in partnership with our new allies. And in 2161, Earth became the capital of an interstellar federation of sentient species that has since grown to be the most powerful democracy in the explored Galaxy. It is hard to imagine a more momentous era to live through, or one that challenged so many preconceptions and expectations. This article will provide an overview of these pivotal decades, giving students an introduction to the crucible that forged modern Humanity.
