The Russian pet name set a firework off inside Shane's mind as he heard it cooed from behind him. The intonation was just as he remembered, but the voice was much deeper.He turned and felt himself short circuit. It took every ounce of willpower to not let his jaw drop cartoonishly to the floor. This one is so good so far. Ilya and Shane went to the same hockey camp as teenagers - starting at 14 or 15. For 3 summers. They were best friends
They could not stay in touch when Ilya would go back to Russia after the camps. Ilya’s dad freaked out about their friendship and prevented Ilya from getting drafted by the NHL as had been planned and hoped for.
They reunited after a gap of a few years when Ilya joined the NHL - same team as Shane

Objectively, this used to be true.
