Summary
Spending time with Alex was like settling down on the sofa after a long day. Simple and comfortable and above all easy in a way Greg’s brain didn’t normally let things be.
It was also, inevitably, too short. Their plane would land in London and the two men would make their way to baggage reclaim together and once they had their bags, they’d inevitably part ways. Alex would go back to his life in the country, to the wife and kids and band and enough responsibilities that Greg practically had a panic attack just thinking of them. And Greg would head back to his flat where he could be an absolute mess of a human in peace, barely holding it together, whatever the fuck it was, so opposite to the Greg who got to sit next to Alex and try to get him to break in increasingly absurd ways over the course of their 18th interview over a five day stretch.
Five days together seemed to be all they ever got: five days of studio recordings, just enough to make the foundation of a weirdly perfect working relationship, but not enough for anything more.
Not that Greg even wanted there to be an anything more, of course. He didn’t know what he wanted.
Except for more time with Alex.

Ed is used to taking care of himself.
He's also used to taking care of others, like James and Alex, because sometimes they're little and they need caring for. It doesn't matter what Greg says; he doesn't have to be little like they do. He doesn't need people to look after him. Never has. And he's spent his whole life proving that, and hiding the truth, and he's gotten very good at it. If it wasn't for that stupid task, no one would even have found out! No one would be treating him like he's any different. He's still him, he's still the same Ed. He can be big if he wants to.
Throwing a massive tantrum in the park whilst watching Little Alex Horne play football kind of puts a dent in that plan.

“Yeah, I’d bet Greg didn’t have ‘drop dead suddenly’ in his diary either,” Tim said, before letting out a noise that indicated Mark had punched him. “Sorry.”
But the joke – such as it was – grounded Alex. Reminded him that this was real. This was happening.

Alex can appreciate James Acaster, the comic who adores Alex’s show and brings his whimsically weird brand of funny to it, but James, the man who’s potentially doing perverted things with Greg—things Alex maybe, perhaps wants to do himself? That guy is a bit much for this early in his day.
