Summary
Wyatt wasn’t in the business of passing judgement on people he didn’t know very well, but it was hard not to with Rozanov. Beside Dallas Kent, who Wyatt had the misfortune of being on a team with, Rozanov was probably the most notorious asshole in the league.
But while Wyatt had certainly heard Rozanov chirp and say things that were demonstrably malicious, he couldn’t think of a time Rozanov had used a slur, or said anything even remotely offensive. He stuck to chirps about the actual hockey ability of his quarry, and, while they often stung and were usually egregiously hyperbolic in nature, they were never vulgar or derogatory.
And now this: Shane, probably the nicest hockey player Wyatt had ever encountered in his tenure in the NHL, had invited Rozanov to be co-director of the charity. And not only that, but Shane had named it after Rozanov’s mother. Wyatt trusted Shane implicitly, so if Shane trusted Rozanov, then so did Wyatt.

Summary
Ilya grabs Shane by the chin and holds him still. He ducks his head to find where Shane's eyes are looking and tries to coax them onto his face. They land near his right eyebrow. Close enough. "You better fold your clothes really fucking fast."
Shane's grin is a lighting flash with nothing to ground it; it takes over his face immediately and spreads out, crinkling the constellations of freckles over his skin and half mooning his eyes. Ilya already has his hand on the live wire, the current electrocuting him again and again and again. He can't look away.
Ilya watches Shane bend at the waist to put his clothes on the dresser and realizes that it's the same motion as when Shane bends to set up for the face off. He will never be able to separate hockey from the things he loves.

His mom fills him in, standing with hunched shoulders in a cramped, too-bright hallway at The Ottawa Hospital. An illegal check into the boards; they were worried about a head injury, because Ilya wasn’t moving and he’s usually so, so hard to take down like that. But then his heart stopped, and they had to CPR right there on the ice to bring it back. To bring him back.
Shane buckles, crouching against the wall with his head in his hands. His mom’s voice is fuzzy above him, her hair tickling his shoulder when she leans down to comfort him. Ilya’s heart fucking stopped. On the ice, in the middle of a game, he died.
Or: Ilya goes into a coma after an accident on the ice. Shane figures out how to build him a life worth waking up for.
