He had felt the thread between them snap. The taut cord along his chest, anchored around his sternum, relieved of pressure when the other end of the link hit the ice.
All he could do was watch.
Watch, as the paramedics hurried onto the ice in a blur of bodies and gear, not making any sound.
Watch, as a hand held him back from gliding forward to the blue, crimson blur in a sea of white, chasing the phantom of the thread that used to be like muscle memory or an exercise of habit.
He swallowed once, accompanied by dryness, the taste of dread, and the metallic tinge of overexerted lungs from the cigarettes he had said he’d quit.
His mouth formed a word, a name. One he had said before in a whisper, and then lost the one attached to it.

Summary
After Scott Hunter comes out on national TV, Ilya wants nothing more than to go to Shane's cottage and figure out a way to make their relationship work. Too bad he broke things off and blocked Shane after the Montreal/Boston game that sent Shane to the hospital. Upon discovering that Shane has blocked him back, Ilya decides to show up at the cottage and win his Hollander back.

“Jane would not block me,” Ilya insisted again, even as his chest constricted with uncertainty. Ilya Rozanov did not get blocked, especially by pretty, pouty, freckled Canadians who meant everything.
Marleau threw his hands out in helpless surrender, Ilya’s glare fierce enough to send him scurrying from the kitchen. Ilya waited a beat before carefully tapping Shane’s contact to call. He held his breath, heart sinking to the pit of his stomach as it rang once and connected to voicemail. Clenching his jaw, he hung up and tried again. Then one more time, torment ripping through his already tattered heart. This time when it connected, he left a message. Short, sweet, and full of intention even if Shane wouldn’t hear it. “I’m coming to the cottage.”

Sylvia leaned toward Shane. “Ask for his number,” she whispered loudly enough that it wasn’t a whisper at all. “They’ll be taking me away in T-minus five minutes. You don’t wanna miss your shot kiddo!”

Shane Hollander is tired of wanting someone he cannot have, and he’s dying as he waits for someone who will not stay. Someone who doesn’t want to stay, not when there are so many others waiting for him. Fun of another variety, Shane left a treat amongst many.
It’s humiliating. It’s distracting. And it feels like shit.
He wishes he could erase his feelings, move on as easily. In an effort to gain back control over the ‘situation’ that has become his romantic attraction to a notorious player, Shane attempts at imitating Ilya Rozanov’s methods until he perfects them and becomes as good as keeping it light and casual as his rival.
Or Shane tries to Hoe Phase himself into a self discovery journey to choke and kill his feelings for Ilya Rozanov. Ilya is not the only who suffers from it, but he sure feels like he’s being choked and killed.
