"There's something in your eyes that feels like something I haven't had in a long time, or have ever had. And I just knew that if I passed this up, I wouldn't get the opportunity to ever have anything close to this again."
"What does it feel like?" Eddie asks him, with something akin to wonder and understanding painted on his features. The hand he was comforting himself with, comes back down to meet with his again, and the hold is tight and secure, grounding. His fingertips turn white with his reciprocating hold, uncaring of the slight twinge of pain that comes from his injured arm as he latches on.
The burn underneath the gauze sears like the red imprinted in his skin, and it matches the flush on Buck's cheeks, as he says. "It feels like coming home."

Above him, Eddie makes a sleepy sound, tightening his arms around Buck’s chest. “Buck?” he mumbles. “You up?”
Buck lets out a long breath, settling gratefully into Eddie’s hold. “Yeah,” he says quietly.
There must be something in his voice, because Eddie frowns down at him, lifting a hand to stroke over his cheekbone. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” Buck says, and actually means it. He presses his face to Eddie’s sternum, feels his pulse against his skin, and breathes. “Nothing. I just—I had a dream that you were mad at me.”

Tommy sputters.
“You tell him, bro!” a voice calls out from a few rows back, and Buck snorts out a laugh.
It draws Tommy’s attention, unfortunately.
“You think this is funny?” Tommy asks, towering over them both. “Cheating on me right in front of my face?"
"Does it really count as cheating?" the woman beside Eddie mutters, looking away hastily when Tommy glares at her.

“And why do you need me?” Will was unable to suppress the bitterness in his tone, “You’ve got plenty of experts and doctors on your staff. I’m just a grad student, and I’m halfway across the country. What could I possibly do that no one else could?”
Dr. Owens cleared his throat on the other end of the line, “You’re the only one who’s been there and made it out alive. Honestly, we could use your expertise. We’ve caught a specimen. A live one. And you’re definitely going to want to see this.”

Summary
When the firefighter walks into Eddie's coffeeshop, Eddie immediately knows two things about him: he's not human, and he's the love of Eddie's life.
Oh, he knows a bunch of other things too, obviously. He's about thirty, a few months younger than Eddie himself. He has a scar on his throat, like he got stabbed there, and one of his legs has some metal rods in it that must have come from a bad injury. The guy doesn't know he's not human, which is a tricky thing to figure out, but Eddie's almost positive. Most of the non-humans he knows have always known they aren't people, but there are exceptions, and they tend to carry themselves differently. Ana before her first full moon as a werewolf had a very different vibe from Ana after.
The firefighter moves like he knows he doesn't belong, but not like he knows why. Like he's afraid of taking up space, afraid of being noticed.
As if Eddie is even capable of not noticing him.

Summary
Eddie must have heard him laugh because he turns towards Buck and inhales sharply. Buck furrows his brows, unsure why Eddie is giving him that look. He is even more confused when Eddie breathes, “Wow.”
Buck blinks. “What’s wrong? Is there something on my face?”
Eddie shakes his head really slowly and his expression is- of awe? Buck can count the number of times that Eddie has had that face on him but never once has he looked at Buck like this.
(Eddie has looked at him like this many times according to Chim and Hen apparently. Buck will realize later that whenever he catches Eddie staring at him, it’s the same one as when Eddie saw him for the first time after his procedure. It’ll make Buck’s heart flutter, and fall in love with Eddie a little bit more)
“No.” Eddie mumbles, eyes wide and he looks slightly crazed. Buck realizes that it must be anesthetics that are making him loopy. “God, you are so gorgeous.”
That startles a laugh out of Buck, and he covers his mouth in disbelief. “I’m what?”
“Gorgeous.” Eddie repeats very seriously.

“Eddie, hey,” Buck said, squeezing Eddie’s wrist. “It’s okay, it’s alright. Just go be with him, okay?”
Eddie looked torn for a moment, mouth twisted in a frown. Buck pushed him gently towards the doctor and Eddie nodded, turning to go. Buck gave him a supportive smile that fell the second Eddie and the doctor were gone, the heavy ER door closing behind them with a loud click. His shoulders slumped and he buried his face in his hands, collapsing in on himself like a puppet with its strings cut.
