While in high school, his eye doctor had noticed damage to his eyes. His quirk, which already made him deaf, was costing him his eyesight as well.
“A very bright explosion can temporarily ‘bleach’ the photoreceptors in your retina,” his doctor had said. “You should be more careful when looking at your explosions.”
Since then, he’s had annual eye doctor appointments. Every time, they had to dilate his eyes, and every time, it kicked his ass and gave him vertigo worse than any concussion he's ever had. What pisses him off is that it wasn't the act of dilation that messed him up, it was the side effects.

Ed hated the rain.
The rain, like it always did, came suddenly and had intentions to stay until the end of the week. The rain in Central was nothing like the rain in Resembool. The rain in Resembool was cool and light, almost like a blanket of life coming from the sky. Its only intention was to soothe its residents, give life to its plants and animals, and replenish the thirsty lakes and streams.
In Central, the rain brought nothing but pain and misery.

“I’m his husband!” Shane explodes. “I wouldn’t be playing regardless because the hospital will be calling me the moment he lands there because I am his next of kin, so with all due respect Coach, get out of my way because I’m going with him.”
Things get dead silent and Ilya wishes he could find out what else is going on, but that’s the moment his concussion decides to win the battle because everything fades away and goes black.

Summary
Instead of Shane, it is Ilya who suffers a concussion during the Boston-Montreal game in April 2017. Dazed and agitated, Ilya briefly starts speaking and responding only in Russian and the medics can’t calm him down. Luckily, Shane started studying Russian after Ilya spoke to him in Russian on the phone from Moscow. For no particular reason. Certainly not because he’s fallen in love with Ilya Rozanov.
In Montreal with lingering concussion symptoms, Ilya is advised not to fly home for a few days, and the hospital won’t release him without assurances that he has someone to stay with him until his symptoms improve. Luckily, Shane conveniently has a condo in Montreal no one knows about and a few days before he has to travel again.
But Ilya’s symptoms don’t resolve after a few days. Which is okay; Shane can handle it. He can take care of Ilya, study Russian, lead his team into the playoffs, and keep Ilya’s continued presence in Montreal a secret. He can do everything, no problem. He is Shane Hollander after all.
