Jaskier had felt like he was coming down with something for the last few days. He was tired, he had a tickle at the back of his throat and he felt vaguely nauseous. He hadn't told Geralt, he didn't need to deal with anything else right now. If Geralt knew, he wouldn't let him perform. If he didn’t perform he didn’t earn any money, and they sorely needed the coin.

“Hah,” Jaskier exclaimed, although there was no mirth in it. “Had it when I was a child, didn’t I. Can’t catch it again.” He hiccuped sadly. Before this moment Geralt hadn’t known it was possible to hiccup sadly, but Jaskier was a man of many talents. “‘nother round,” he mumbled at the barman.
In the wake of Essi’s death, Geralt finds Jaskier. He’s not doing so well.

“Fuck me.” Jaskier emerged from the half-collapsed doorway to the East of the room, ducking beneath a fallen pillar. “That was a little close for comfort.”
Jaskier finds himself as monster bait once more. This time, he doesn't come out of it unscathed. Geralt realises how dangerous Jaskier's role in these hunts really is.

And Geralt had looked him in the eye and decided that the bard, his bard, was only trying to trick him. Jaskier had lied to him yes, but only because he had thought Geralt would kill him if he knew the truth about his parentage. The thought hurt more than any blow, but with the information he knew now, he knew he was right. His first impulse was to go find Jaskier, but did he even deserve that? With a pang, Geralt realized that even though he now missed Jaskier more than he’d thought possible, the bard was at least, finally, safe.

“Darling”, Jaskier sighed, but did as his lover had asked, blinking slowly as Geralt scrutinized him in the flickering light of the candles on their nightstand, “I know I’ve been saying that you’re a sight for sore eyes for some twenty years now, but I’m afraid that even your gorgeous self can’t quite turn that from a figure of speech into actual pain relief”
“Ignoring that”, Geralt told him, stretching up to brush his lips against Jaskier’s too warm forehead even as he pressed his waterskin into his lover’s hand, “I don’t think you’ve given yourself a concussion. Pretty sure the best thing you can do is drink some water and let me coddle you for a bit”
“I knew there was a reason I preferred your medical advice over anyone else’s”

Summary
Geralt sighs, straightening his shoulders and taking in one last breath to calm himself before he lifts his hand and knocks on the door in front of him.
A muffled “Come in,” is shouted in response and he grabs the door handle and opens it, stepping inside the room. It is warm, wood crackling in the fireplace and casting orange shadows all over the wall.
There are a few candles lit on the table nearby as the only source of light. It should feel cosy. It doesn’t.
“You weren’t at dinner,” Geralt says, states matter-of-factly. You weren’t at dinner and I was worried is what he wants to say. He doesn’t.
“I wasn’t hungry.” Defiance. Anger. Indifference. Jaskier looks at him with tired eyes, the dark circles underneath them even more accentuated by the low light. He’s sat on his bed, legs sprawled out and his back against the wall. Geralt tries to ignore the bottle in his hand, but can’t ignore the smell of wine that is leaking from every one of Jaskier’s pores.
After everything that has happened, Geralt and Jaskier are both broken. A simple question is enough to make them both come undone.

Things were different after the mountain.
For one thing, when Jaskier met up with Geralt again, it was with a refugee princess in tow. Somehow this wasn’t surprising, given the way Geralt’s life often went, but it did create a different dynamic.
Beyond that, though, Geralt was different. Softer, somehow. Like he was actively trying to smooth away his hard edges, and his face often constricted with the pain of it.
Jaskier didn’t quite know what to do with it.
