Here's the thing. If you pulled out the American-English dictionary; hidden somewhere under Mike’s bed, and asked him to describe himself with one hundred different words, brave would be the last one on his list.
But their knees are touching, and Mike is suddenly lightly grasping Will’s wrists, holding him, and Mike can’t even see Will’s eyes in this stupidly dark coat closet, but Mike's eyes have adjusted well enough to see the twinge of color on his cheeks, the intent anticipation of his jaw. So Mike does something he wouldn’t.
He’s brave about it.“If I,” Mike licks his lips, voice low like he doesn’t want to scare Will off. Will doesn’t take his eyes off him, “If I wanted to kiss you on purpose this time, would you let me?”
Mike and Will accidentally kiss while folding laundry together. Mike is feeling less than normal about it.

At first, Mike was unsure how to approach him when he got like this. But they’ve been living together for months now, never further than five feet apart in their dorm beds, so Mike’s learned what works and what doesn’t.
It works when he wakes Will like this, with gentle hands and words, telling him he’s safe. It works when he climbs into Will’s warm bed, turning him on his side and curling up against his back, an arm over his waist and his cheek pressed against his shoulder. They lie together like that until Will’s hiccupping gasps soften into steady breaths, until Mike feels him go limp in his arms and he knows he’s fallen back asleep. It always works.
or: Will has nightmares and Mike is the only one who can console him. Not even Will's boyfriend can. Mike takes great pride in this fact.

Will pressed his face to the glass, wishing that he were closer. The man’s cheeks were pale, having thick eyebrows and lips. His nose was long, though it didn’t disrupt the harmony of the man’s features. His eyes were the most captivating part of his face: wide and brown, reflecting the moonlight.
In other words, he was beautiful.
Will found himself blushing, feeling foolish for swooning over the knight, who clearly was just doing his job. He couldn’t help but itch for his parchment and ink, to see the man up close, take in those eyes when they weren’t forced to remain a disciplined neutral.

“Right, obviously,” Mike mutters before stabbing his chicken sandwich with his toothpick.
“What?” Will asks despite every inkling in his body telling him to drop this conversation and just pick up his burger. “Did you think I was just going to leave?”
“No, I-”
“Because I wouldn’t just…” Will cuts himself off before he can finish and looks down at his plate instead, the unsaid words resting bitter on his tongue. I wouldn’t just leave with no explanation. Not like you did.
----------After everything they've been through, it is Mike who rips off the final band-aid of their friendship. Years pass of Will pretending like he never thinks about Mike at all. Years pass of him forging his own life and finally letting go.
But when a young boy shows up at Will's apartment, it becomes clear that he'll never fully be done with Mike Wheeler.

Maybe if he shuts his eyes, it will all go away.

And this time, he has about a foot and a half more and lethal powers in his palms.
And now? Dying is not an option.
