Summary
Alexander remembers what it felt like - the horror of it all. Macbeth had gone entirely fine, more than fine, if you'd asked him. Of course Richard would be pissy about not playing Macbeth (because God forbid he play anything besides the leading role), but how that involved Alexander (or anyone else, for that matter) in any way was a difficult riddle to solve. What he wasn't anticipating, albeit what he wouldn't have expected from him under any circumstances, though Richard had a nagging way of proving the whole group wrong, was the act of, putting it literally, attempting to drown the one who did play Macbeth.
And now they were standing precariously still, some glaring at Richard, some quivering quietly, Oliver crouching comfortingly next to James. And of course there was Colin, standing there, slouching slightly, a look of absolute terror, pure and raw as daylight, adorning his features. Biting his tongue, Alexander tried to swallow the rising feeling of worry for the other. Suppressing the dire need to protect him, though, was something he couldn't control.
