Now, that Sherlock had found himself a flatmate, this one needed to be checked inside out. The same with his brother's work-related people. He had become a private detective. Sherlock called it a consulting detective.
Mycroft's workload increased with rescuing Sherlock and checking his associates' files.

Lestrade swore he would lose his mind if he ever had to see that rubbish again—
“What,” Mycroft said, studying him with an expression that somehow managed to be both intrigued and utterly uninterested at the same time—only Mycroft could pull off two such opposing moods on a single face—“do you believe Sherlock is the only Holmes with a substance abuse problem?”
Having said that, Mycroft withdrew his gaze and looked down, adjusting the cuff of his sleeve so that it fell neatly over his wrist. There were marks there—several of them—but Lestrade knew now was not the time to bring them up.
“If I hadn’t promised your brother,” Lestrade said quietly, “I really ought to arrest you right now.”
“You can’t arrest me because you work for me, Lestrade,” Mycroft replied evenly. “And I assure you, if I were to lose my current position and authority, my successor would make your life far more unpleasant than it already is.”
