Summary
The first time Rolan brings it up is on an autumn night in senior year. They’re on the verge of greening out, so high things don’t feel real, laying on the floor of Rand’s parents’ attic.
“Y’know, I wish you were a girl.”
It breaks the silence like the tolling of a bell. The clock ticks over to three in the morning.
“Whaddya mean?” Rand asks.
“It’d be easier. Easier than living… living like this.”
Rolan doesn’t elaborate any further.

Summary
Chip slings up Gillion's hand in his own, and somehow, without further push or pull or any thought of his own, their fingers slide together. Not perfectly interlocked, one by one, but twined together nonetheless, Chip's knuckles sliding about and clasping against Gillion's, sharp ridges of bone pressed harmlessly into soft skin.
"You should stop brooding by yourself, Tidestrider," he finishes, raising an eyebrow at him. "Moon'll always be there. C'mon, have some fun." With me, he might say, if he were any deeper in the drink.
As it is, all he does is tug Gillion towards him. Even though Chip knows Gillion wouldn't budge an inch if he didn't want to, he sways as easy as that, slipping without protest from his watchful post beside the banister to go where Chip leads.
OR: Chip catches Gillion staring up at the moon all alone at a party. A drunken talk ensues, involving papayas, eggs, and the typical sort of sappy feelings one co-captain may share for (and perhaps with) another.

MAJOR SPOILERS FOR JRWI RIPTIDE EPISODE 65, 98, AND 101
The ocean was quiet, the water was calm and the sky was dark, but on the deck of the albatross, a figure was seated, staring off into the distance.
Chip sighed, putting his head in his hands. It had been one of those nights again, the ones where every time he blinked, the flashing images of tentacles reaching out of a swirling whirlpool, then Arlin falling off of the boat, then finally the flashing images of fire enveloping a building haunted his thoughts. That was where it ended, thankfully, and Chip would open his eyes quickly before it could develop into something worse.
So that’s why he was sitting there, because he couldn’t bring himself to fall asleep, worried if he closed his eyes and even tried, it would consume his thoughts, and he wouldn’t be able to drag himself out of that state this time.
