Simon wakes up in an ocean of blood, in a body he knows he shouldn't have, because his body was supposed to have been vaporized cell by cell in an explosive decompression. This isn't all bad, maybe he'd even hazard a guess that it's a good thing, but the fact that he can touch the surface of the water and feels the bottom of the ocean right at his back at the same time may present a problem.
He's become something bigger than us.

“What the—” Jay began, sitting back up, though she realised her mistake when Gillion whimpered as his body forced itself to growth again. “Fuck, okay, sorry, I’m—do you want me to lay back down?” Vision swimming, Gillion got himself to nod. “Okay.”
She did. Gillion’s arm burned where it was thrown around her. His bones felt like they’d broken and regrown wrong. His organs felt beaten tender. His veins itched, warning of danger.
And of course Jay understood. She had always been the smartest of the bunch. “You know, when you said you’re five-one when no one’s looking at you, you could’ve clarified that that wasn’t a joke.”
It was said with love, of course. As everything she said was. It meant you idiot, you could’ve saved yourself so much trouble. Why do you never save yourself trouble you don’t need to be in?
Gillion made himself breathe, fighting the ugly creak of his ribs as his chest expanded. “It wasn’t.”

The first time they’d taken him to the doctor’s office the doctor had looked over his brand new stubby little wings and taken some measurements and said things like we’ll start you on a low dose of the medication and in about six months you can come back to be fitted for a harness. Kids at school said stuff like weirdo and freak of nature.
Yeah. He was content to sit there and indulge Doc and let him ramble on about evolution and skeletal structures. It wasn’t so bad.
Around 1% of the population has wings. Through the wonders of modern medicine, a mix of medication and specialised clothing can be used to conceal this aberrant feature until such a time as they can be surgically removed.
Marty found out, the hard way, that wings ran in his family when he was almost thirteen.

Summary
The Battle of Starcourt has been won, but its aftershocks are still rippling. The Party are starting to adjust to having two of their members at a distance, though everyone's still missing El and Will, Mike most of all.
But life in Hawkins never stays normal for long. Someone - or something - is following Steve and Robin, and they may not be the only ones under surveillance. A spectre from El's past makes an unexpected - and unwanted - reappearance. And an old enemy may turn out to be much more than meets the eye.
And sometimes, the bad guys are smart, too.
Separated by miles and misunderstandings, with communications failing and their enemies somehow always one step ahead, Hawkins' strange little fellowship find themselves caught between holding on and moving forward. If they want to survive to see another November, they'll have to face the past - and each other.
