Summary
It started like this: A boy with the ability to warp reality met an angel and a demon and he made assumptions.
You might say it started like this: An angel and a demon found a marriage contract hung on the wall of the angel's bookshop. They didn't question it.
It also could have started like this: Once upon a time, the angel told the demon he went too fast. The demon took it to heart.
Aziraphale and Crowley find themselves somehow married. Crowley fears going too fast. Aziraphale forges ahead. Neither know how to ask questions of each other.

Summary
In the immediate aftermath of the Nope-Let's-Notpocalypse, Crowley and Aziraphale tentatively begin to move on, hoping Heaven and Hell will leave them alone in the wake of both of their failed trials.
Of course, nothing could possibly be that simple.
It isn't that Gabriel or Beelzebub have actually figured out how the trials were subverted...but boy, do they THINK they have it figured out. Thankfully, it won't take much to keep them in the dark.
(Crowley and Aziraphale just have to spend eternity together, pretending to be in love with each other. All Crowley needs to do is make sure Aziraphale never finds out that everything he's saying and doing is true.)

Summary
It was a jealously guarded secret amongst a handful of angels and demons that to possess a single feather of an Ethereal or Occult being essentially meant that you possessed the angel or demon it came from. Crowley had known this before he Fell, had forgot, and then had been rudely reminded again when someone had got ahold of one of Hastur’s feathers.
(The memory was traumatizing enough that anytime it was brought up, Crowley dove headlong into a four day binge that involved copious amounts of strong whiskey and sobbing in his bathtub.)

This assumption is shattered one day at an antiques show of all places, when the angel learns that Crowley's abilities reach far beyond a mere silver tongue, and the knowledge ignites something primal within him.
