Ilya Rosanov is the classic life of the party, doesn’t take anything seriously RN, but is frustratingly competent - much to Shane’s annoyance. Ilya makes the ED look easy, flirting with anyone with a pulse. He has even the most intimidating of dragon nurses wrapped around his finger and he uses it to his advantage. If only he was half as happy as he pretended. Fuck.
Dr Shane Hollander is a hardworking, strait-laced (pun intended), by-the-book emergency specialist new to this hospital, but definitely not new to Ilya Rosanov. Shane has had his nose to the grindstone for years and has finally made it to consultancy. If only it felt half as good as it should and the loneliness didn’t settle so deep in his bones. It’s Rosanov’s fault. And now Rosanov is here. In his hometown. After all this time. Fuck.

Ilya felt his heart fall into his stomach, afraid of the next words to come out of his Coach’s mouth.
“We asked the rookies who they’d like to live with and, well, LaPointe wanted to board with you, Chouinard. And Young with you, Bood,” Wiebe then turned to Ilya who had frozen on the spot, “And Roz, Haas wants to live with you.”
Bood and Chouinard chuckled as they watched Ilya’s eyes widen in horror.

In a world where humans are living longer than ever, society can't cope. It's globally decided that anyone under 30 will become a minor again. Their adulthood stripped from them. Their guardianship handed over to their parents or any eligible next of kin. As a kind of grace period, there is a short span of time between the announcement of the law and the enforcement of it where anyone 18-30, who does not want to return to their parents' custody, can instead voluntarily sign away custody of themselves to a person of their choosing, as long as they are over 30.
Ilya Rozanov, who is only 22 and has just become captain of the Boston Raiders, is suddenly found with nowhere good to go. He's about to be deported back to Russia unless he can find someone he trusts, who is over 30, and might just like him enough to sign the Blue Form and at least keep him out of his father's control
Scott Hunter, who is 36 and only just came out as gay the year before by kissing Kip Grady on the ice, was not planning on becoming a parent. He definitely wasn't planning on becoming a parent to the player who has been the biggest pain in his ass for the past 4 years.
Eventual Hollanov. Shane does not appear in first few chapters

Scott hadn’t even been there for that. He’d only see it weeks later, on a video shared only because of Hollander’s horrified face when he’d tried to drag the man to safety before realizing he was already gone.
“I don’t just mean in that fight,” Rogers said. The vehemence took Scott by surprise, making him lean back a little. “Before and after, with every game you play, every battle I fight, every interview we give — we inspire people. We give people hope, and there is little that is more powerful than hope.”
They were hockey players, not heroes.

At some point between getting home and finding the mess in the kitchen, Shane calls the police and his parents in quick succession.
He doesn’t remember those phone calls at all. Blocked them from his memory the second they were over—doesn’t know what he said, what his mother replied—what the operator on the other of the line asked him.
The only proof he has of ever placing the calls is the record of them in his phone—neatly stack over-on-another. 911 right below Mom.
Below that, a series of phone calls to Ilya (husband), some barely even twenty seconds long, just short little I love you’s and what juice did you say you wanted from the store’s. Shane actually has to scroll for a while before he finds any other number in his call log.
If Shane were to add all of that data into an excel sheet he’d have proof that Ilya took up about 90% of his call records and yet it doesn’t feel like enough.
