    Summary

The cloning facility was secreted deep in one of the Empire’s most secret bases. Buried a kilometer under the ground, maintained only by droids, it had been built as a final safeguard: the place no one—not the Sith, not the Jedi, not the Rebels, not the Imperials—would ever find. From this hidden bunker the reborn Emperor would launch his revenge on the galaxy. Rising from the ashes of defeat, with all the powers that the Force availed him, he would step out of the cloning tank with his youth restored, his powers intact, and with wealth unimagined by most beings stashed away for his use. He would once again begin his conquest of the galaxy.

That had been the plan, anyway.

    Something might have gone wrong.

More than one thing, in fact.

    Summary

A complete series of episode reviews written after re-watching all three seasons of Star Trek (the original series) between 2011-2013. Each review consists of a plot synopsis (rendered as entertaining as possible) followed by analysis/reflection. These reviews were originally posted on LiveJournal. I am crossposting them here, where it is much easier to keep the whole series in one place.

I first became a fan of TOS in the 1980s when I was an adolescent girl. I am now a middle-aged lesbian who, let's say, knows a lot more about gender issues than I did back then. There will be some discussion of same. If you're not interested in gender politics, you might not have a whole lot of fun with these reviews. If you are, though, you may discover that gender in TOS is actually more complicated--a Vulcan might even call it fascinating--than it might at first appear.

I love the show, but I do not love it uncritically. I believe there is much to be learned by asking the question: Exactly why and how did this particular episode get this bad?

Oh, also, I see slash people. But in TOS, believe me, it's there. And not just because we want it to be there, either. Enjoy!

    Summary

Soontir has studied the Rogues as opponents but he does not yet know what to make of them as colleagues. They lack… not discipline precisely. In battle they fight with the mix of rigid discipline and unpredictable chaos to be expected of the elite unit the Rebels— the New Republic —bills them as. Otherwise Antilles’ pilots display a casual disregard for structure and hierarchy that is unsettlingly reminiscent of the 181st when Soontir had first arrived.

Antilles does not resemble his sister, Klivian and Celchu have grown into seasoned soldiers rather than the green cadets he had trained, and Janson is more complicated than his Imperial intelligence file would suggest.

In short, upon his defection to the New Republic, Soontir Fel finds that Rogue Squadron is not entirely what he expected.

Set at the start of the Family Ties run of the X-wing: Rogue Squadron comics (issues 26-27), right after the end of In the Empire’s Service and The Making of Baron Fel (issues 21-24 and 25).
