He had wondered on that matter often – who had sent him here? There was one suspicion that seemed likelier than others – what is dead may never die, but rises again, harder, and stronger. Was it the Drowned God that put another soul inside a body come into its power?
Stannis hoped not – for all he knew the Drowned God was some eldritch monster, this world's sleeping Cthulhu, with most malicious intent towards humanity. If Stannis was his pawn, he'd rather die starving.
But perhaps the Drowned God's power waned beyond the Sunset Sea. And was not the line of his forefathers come from Elenei, daughter of the sea god? Perhaps it was this sea god that had stuck him inside Stannis' body – merged soul with mind and memory and made another of two – a Stannis that was not wholly Stannis, but also somebody else? He preferred that explanation.
But it did not pay to wonder. Until some god would come and claim that it was his doing – a claim he would accept, for he did not know elsewise, worrying about it was just folly.
