Usually it’s John who pesters him into getting up and heading home before it gets too late, (Arthur, we’ll miss the train tomorrow; Arthur, the street cats will want to see us; Arthur, I want to go home) but tonight he is silent. Arthur stays longer.

Something cold spread when he realized that Arthur was touching the scar on his throat. “Or our only choice being to kill ourselves,” he mumbled. “I remember dying, John. I remember dying too many damn times. And I’m afraid this will be the one it sticks.”
John’s vision blurred and for a moment he thought the sky was shifting, its dim lights forming into a mocking and twisted mimicry of stars. Then he realized it was tears. His tears.
