I've decided to reread and analyze/review the Harry Potter books, one chapter at a time, as a way to process my thoughts and feelings towards this franchise and it's author.

Summary
There's a lot of stuff in the Harry Potter books that in retrospect foreshadowed the true character of the author, the most iconic these to me will always be the way she chose to depict slavery. When I read The Goblet of Fire for the first time as a kid I was dumbfounded by the attitude the story took towards Hermione trying to abolish slavery and I was angered by how that subplot resolved. This was back when I was too ignorant to recognize the Goblins as antisemitic caricatures, or that there was anything weird about the names Cho Chang or Kingsley Shaklebolt, or that there was anything wrong about how she wrote fat people. Even back then I still knew it was wrong to depict abolitionists as misguided and slavery as a benevolent institution.

My life on Earth was awful. Becoming an Isekai protagonist was supposed to fix all my problems. I was supposed to get an awesome cheat ability, and to have a harem of waifus following me around as I went on a quest to defeat the demon lord or something. So far I’ve been in another world for about three weeks and so far nothing’s happened like it was supposed to. I’ve got no superpowers, no quest, and worst of all no harem.

Adora feels ashamed about (among other things) her best in the Horde, her feelings for Catra, her struggles to adjust to Bright Moon, and her failures (or in many cases simply perceived failures) as She-Ra.

Willow was naturally introverted and quiet, where Luz is naturally extroverted and loud/energetic. But the two also contrast one another on a much more fundamental level...

Summary
Augustus “Gus” Porter is a foil for Luz Noceda. Both are extroverted nerds with a flair for the dramatic; but where Luz is a human obsessed with witches and fantasy, Gus is a witch obsessed with humans and Earth. Gus’s enthusiasm towards yet ignorance about the human world, and the excitement he shows towards things that seem commonplace to us; reflects how Luz looks to natives of the Boiling Isles. Gus is raised by his dad where Luz was raised by her mom. They parallel each other in other ways as well. On multiple different levels Gus’s characterization ties into the theme of Fantasy vs. Reality. This goes right down to his magical specialty being illusions.
