Summary
In the early days of the Justice League, Bruce is out more and more frequently on League missions, and Dick (age 13) is growing more and more restless and lonely stuck at home. His friends can't know he's Robin, and there are no superheroes Dick's age--or so he thinks, until Bruce receives a call from Barry, desperately seeking mentorship advice. Dick asks to meet the Flash's new sidekick, but Bruce refuses; a fight ensues, ending in Dick getting grounded. One week in Gotham off patrol, and then two weeks alone, far from Gotham... at a little family farm in Smallville, Kansas.
And hey, if a certain Midwestern speedster sidekick just so happens to turn up, that'd be just fine. Or would it?

I first read this fic last summer—though I can't remember for the life of me the month or date, so I may very well have already passed my one year anniversary of having read it—and I still think about it nearly every time I sit down to write something. The quality of storytelling, characterization, and overall writing ability/mastery of prose is unlike anything else I've seen. This isn't to say other fics haven't achieved this same quality, merely that this story is so unique to me in its own branding, particularly in its portrayal of the characters. From a fandom-specific perspective, I haven't seen any other fic more accurately depict teenage superheroes in an early 2000s setting. I'm honestly a bit blown away by how solid the character dynamics are is, particularly within each relationship—whether that's Dick with Wally, Dick with Bruce, Dick with Clark, Bruce with Clark...I could go on.
This story gives me the strangest sense of nostalgia for experiences I never had; I myself have never gone off to spend a couple of weeks in rural Kansas with extended family (or the equivalent of extended family, in Dick's case) all while trying to navigate a growing friendship alongside sorting out my own personal identity—and yet this fic makes me feel as though I have done all that. This storyline genuinely reminds me of something I'd see in a film (if only DCU movies would think to employ some fan creators to help out with their story creation and writing process for their stories...), and it fills me with such a visceral kind of excitement that I almost feel giddy whenever I think about the fic.
I desperately wish what I've written so far was more detailed and more eloquent than it is, but this is the most organized shape I can force my ramblings into at the moment. None of what I've said could even possibly live up to the experience of actually reading the story and immersing yourself in this author's world, so I suggest that anyone reading this go ahead and just live it for yourself. (To this day, I often come back and re-read excerpts of this fic whenever I need a burst of writing inspiration.)
And before I go, HUGE shoutout to the larger series this author also has going, The World's Finest. I may come back and leave a separate bookmark for that as well, but it's such a fantastic expansion of this fic and the two that came before it!!

The adrenaline hasn’t let up a single bit since he was in his room about twenty five minutes ago. In fact, at the sight of Dick’s face, his chest swells, and he has to resist the urge to latch onto him when he cracks the window open.

This does more justice to Dick's romani heritage than any other fic or comic has, in my opinion. Dick's background is a pretty complicated subject, one that often gets ignored or glossed over in canon and watered down in fanon. I genuinely don't think I can find the words right now to sufficiently honor the achievements of this fic and this author, so I won't try to. Trust me when I say it is an absolute must-read, if not for the quality of writing, characterization, or commentary on racism, then at the very least for a fresh and entertaining Dick Grayson story.

I first found this fic last August, less than a month after it was first published, and it had a drastic yet welcome impact on my perspective of how the DC fandom tends to handle Dick's character and his civilian career. It's incredibly disheartening to realize that the majority of DC fans don't blink twice when a character is made a police officer, and the fact that fan writers have the ability to change canon in any way they please and yet they still make the choice to leave them as cops only proves that the propaganda is working. At the risk of going off on a tangent, I'll end it quickly by saying anyone who believes themselves a fan of DC, Batman, or most especially Dick Grayson, needs to read this. It's interesting, incredibly well-written, and is one of the only fics I've read to successfully bring justice to this aspect of Dick Grayson's character. (Also, even beyond the immorality of any "good" protagonist's becoming a cop and even beyond the non sequitur of making any super hero—especially Dick Grayson—choose to work as a cop and a vigilante simultaneously, it's such a breath of fresh air to see superhero characters doing something interesting for their day job.)
Also, this author wrote an even more direct response to this stupid pattern cop propaganda in comics in their fic "Declensions," which is an utterly phenomenal piece of work with fantastic writing, so definitely give that a read as well!!

There’s too much for me to say about this fic. It is 1:30 AM and my heart is bursting and my hands are trembling and my cheeks hurt from smiling. Never in all my years of reading have I found a story where a platonic relationship is given so much agency, so much weight, and I cannot tell you how much it means to me to see that. This Steve and Robin have something so, so special, that even though I’m still unconvinced it’s even possible to find outside of fiction, it makes me something hopeful. I had to take a five minute break about a fourth of the way through this fic because I was crying too hard to make out the words clearly. I may not have what Steve has with Robin in my own life, but I still felt seen for the first time in recent memory. I can’t think of any other story where a platonic relationship is held to as high a value—if not higher, in some instances—than a romantic relationship, and I am forever grateful for that.
Even beyond my own personal connections to this story, the prose is absolutely phenomenal, and quite literally inspiring—I can’t help but feel the need to go off and write something of my own now. The characterizations were believable and enjoyable, and the love shared not only between Robin and Steve but also between Nancy, Jonathan, and Steve was so overwhelmingly powerful. I don’t think any other fic has been able to make my heart feel quite as full as it does right now.
I’m sure I’m leaving something out here, but I’ve said everything that’s been cycling through my mind for the past couple of hours, so I’m satisfied for now. I only wish I could more eloquently express the depth of my gratefulness, love, and appreciation for this fic.

This is such an utterly phenomenal piece of work, and I cannot stop thinking about it. I'm so impressed by the characterization of everyone in this fic—some of these quotes I could genuinely imagine hearing in the show. Not to mention that Suki's backstory was astounding, especially considering that the author crafted it almost entirely on their own. The prose is so lovely, and I got literal chills numerous times as I read. The logistics and world building of this particular soulmate AU are so unique and enjoyable, which is definitely saying something, since it can be difficult for me to get really invested in soulmate AU's. (But this one? I fell in love within seconds of starting chapter one.) I think every member of the atla fandom has, by definition, a notable soft spot for found family stories, so if you're anything like me, you'll love this (and probably find yourself with the strangest need to cry every more and more the longer you read).

The characterization in this is just... *chef's kiss*
The chemistry between the two of them is *so* enjoyable, and while I definitely don't hate Dick's and Jason's fanon personalities, I feel like this was able to capture the best parts of their canon personalities that the fanon really tries to honor. It can be really difficult to pin down certain aspects of Dick's and Jason's characters/personalities in fic, especially their sibling dynamic, but this honestly might be the best interpretation I've come across. Jason and Dick as Robin and Nightwing just sets up the perfect template for a sorta buddycop-type adventure rife with brotherly shenanigans, and this fic takes that idea and runs with it! -

“I’d sure know it if Sarah Cunningham did, though.” Bucky grinned, struck by the memory. “That gal really knew what she was doing.”
